During the year, the subsidiary title of "The Parliamentary Archives" was adopted by the House of Lords Records Office to make clear the point that the Office serves both Houses of Parliament. The Office has been examining the use of electronic systems. This would have implications for the future management and archiving of electronic records and the need for a commonality of approach. The need for cultural change, as well as technological change, was emphasised. A key objective is to improve access to the Parliamentary Archives and a study has confirmed a requirement for a comprehensive online catalogue and management system which must conform to international standards. A four-year project for the installation of new air conditioning, electrical wiring and a fire protection system for the Victoria Tower repository is planned for late 2000.
