Book Description
The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study is to uncover the essence and meaning of Pagan parent's lived experience. Three Pagan couples completed a two-hour interview about being Pagan parents. The questions focused on describing what it means to be a Pagan parent. Specific questions asked about their roles, fears, difficulties, aspirations for their children, discrimination and specific aspects of Paganism like psychic abilities, karma and rituals. The data was analyzed from a phenomenological perspective. The participants spent most of the interviews discussing aspects of Paganism and parenting. All of the couples expressed experiences of discrimination in their past and present lives. However, they feel the discrimination they experience insignificantly impacts them. This seems due to life decisions they made to lessen the impact of discrimination in their lives like living in accepting locations and not disclosing their religion. While the methods vary, all of the participants discussed discrimination with their children. They teach their children about Paganism through front-loading (teaching their children verbal responses to discrimination) and discussing how others might mistreat them and possible reasons for discrimination.Although discrimination plays a miniscule role in their lives, the intricacies of pagan parenting dominate it. Participants want to transmit their values, teach decision-making skills and focusing on solutions, convey imaginations are of value and teach them about various Pagan beliefs and practices. They accomplish this by modeling appropriate behavior, exposing their children to different experiences, conducting discussions and providing mentors. Participants perform the above to help their children become empowered, self aware and happy.
