Still Lives
Author: Jonathan Cole
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 9780262262170
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
An examination, through personal narratives and reflective commentary, of life without sensation or movement in the body. In writing Still Lives, Jonathan Cole wanted to find out about living in a wheelchair, without having what he calls "the doctor/patient thing" intervene. He has done this by asking people with spinal cord injuries the simple question of what it is like to live without sensation and movement in the body. If the body has absented itself, where does the person reside? He describes his method in the first chapter: "I have gone to people, not with a white coat or a stethoscope...[but] to listen to their lives as they express them," and it is the candid and powerful narratives of twelve people with spinal cord injuries that form the heart of the book.Asking his simple question, Cole discovers that there is no single or simple answer. The twelve people with tetraplegia (known as quadriplegia in the US) or paraplegia whose stories he tells testify to similar impairments but widely differing experiences. Cole employs their individual responses to shape the book into six main sections: "Enduring," "Exploring," "Experimenting," "Observing," "Empowering," and, finally, "Continuing." Each concludes with a commentary on the broader issues raised. Still Lives moves from a view of impairment as tragedy to reveal the possibilities and richness of experience available to those living with spinal injuries. More universally, it offers new perspectives on our relation to our bodies. In exploring the creative and imaginative adjustments required to construct a "still life," it makes a plea for the able-bodied to adjust their view of this most profound of impairments.

Book Description
How quickly can dreams transform into nightmares? For McKenzie, it happened in a split-second. McKenzie is like any other teenage girl: makeup, parties, and boys. But when a horrific car wreck alters her life leaving her paralyzed and her best friend dead, she'll never look at life the same way again. On the day of their high school graduation, McKenzie and her best friend, Aurora, encounter a treacherous thunderstorm while driving home. What should have been a day full of laughter and memories was instead an ongoing nightmare. A distracted McKenzie coupled with dangerously wet roads loses control of their car and collides into a nearby tree. After a four-day coma, McKenzie wakes up in a hospital bed only to discover her legs are unresponsive and that Aurora was killed in the crash. And to make the horrifying reality even worse, she's the one responsible for her best friend's death! McKenzie struggles to adjust to her new life without her legs, or her best friend. Consumed by guilt and misery, she considers taking her own life, but ultimately abandons the dark thought thanks to pleading family members and agrees to enter rehab. But McKenzie knows unless she receives a medical miracle, it is unlikely she will ever walk again. After several months of rehab with no progress, a brokenhearted McKenzie loses what little hope had remained. That is until the day a blind boy appears at the same rehab facility and shows her that being a little different isn't such a bad thing. As their relationship blooms, McKenzie realizes something she had previously dismissed as impossible--she found love in a hopeless place.

ISBN: 9535116215
Category : Medical

Pages : 305
Book Description
Spinal cord injury related paraplegia changes a person's life in a sudden way. The book Topics in Paraplegia provides modern knowledge in this direction. Addressing hot topics related to paraplegia, ranging from surgical management to research therapies with mesenchymal stem cells, this book could be a valued reference for physiatrists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists and physical therapists. The book is organized into four sections. The first covers the epidemiology and psychological conditions associated with paraplegia, the second discusses surgical management and common rehabilitation interventions; the third medical complications and special musculoskeletal issues, while the last outlines current research in animals and humans.
