Excerpt from Papers Respecting the Negociation Betwixt His Majesty's Government and the East India Company: For a Renewal of the Exclusive Privileges That Company Has Enjoyed But this is not the only way in which the meai'ure in queiiion appears to the Court to be pregnant with danger. It propofes to place in. The entire difpofal of the Crown, a regular army, amounting to one hundred and forty thoufand men, commanded by above three thoufand European officers, having a great variety of places of honor and emolument and all the vail. Patronage attaching to inch an army (raving the nomination of cadets) would, mediately or immediately, be under the influence or controul of fome of the Members of His Majeity's Government. This would be a fignal departure fi om the fpirit and letter. Of the Afts of 1784. And 1793, a profeifetl principle of which was, that the Indian patronage, civil and military, ihould be kept entirely out of the hands of the fervants of the Crown. It is not for the Court to enlarge upon a propoiition fo momentous; but they beg leaye, with the utrnoit deference, to ilate, that they would deem it a dereliction of theil' duty, to which no confideration could induce them. To fubmit, to recommend any meaiure of this defcription to the adoption of their conftituents. Knowing however, Sir, your concern for the promotion of the public interefl: a concern which we have frequently witneifed, the Court ifill flatter themfelves, that the con fideration of the renewal of the Company's Charter, a meafure which they believe to be for the intereit of the nation as well as of the Company, will go on without your infii'iing on this pr0pofition, or any further on the other which has been above diicuifed, than may be really compatible with the preiervation of the Indian fyilem.
