For more information about the Archive, visit: http: //www.royalgunpowdermills.com/history-heritage/archives/ Description - from the Preface: Having been requested to write an Article on the Manufacture of Gunpowder for the Aide Memoire, to replace the present pages on this subject, which treats entirely of the old method pursued; I have thought that a pamphlet separately published, would be of service to those who might not wish the expense of such a large work. The different processes employed, I have endeavoured to explain as clearly and simply as possible, without going into too minute detail, or entering into the cost, &c., &c. of Ingredients, and Manufacture, it having been considered for many reasons not advisable to do so. Several Officers have visited this Establishment within the last year, and appeared to take an interest in the verbal descriptions given them by me, on witnessing the different stages of fabrication; should the perusal of this Pamphlet revive any interest they may have taken in the subject treated of, or give those who have not visited the Factory, some slight insight into the manufacture of this most important material of War, my object in writing these pages will have been more than gained. With the exception of a pamphlet written in 1867 by the late Major J. Fraser Baddeley, then Captain-Instructor in the factory, and a brief series of notes compiled by Captain O. H. Goodenough from an unpublished pamphlet of Colonel Boxer's and other sources, for the use of the gentlemen cadets, there is no work which gives an account of the system of manufacture and proof now practised at Waltham Abbey. It must be admitted that there are many points connected with the manufacture and proof of gunpowder which are as yet imperfectly understood. But there is every reason to believe that the labours of the Committee on Explosives, who have at their command new and delicate means for proof and examination, will throw sufficient light on all matters of practical importance. In this comprehensive examination of the powder works, five scholars--a historian, physicist, curator, architectural historian, and biographer--bring their combined expertise to the task of chronicling gunpowder production during the Civil War. In doing so, they make a major contribution to understanding the history of wartime technology and Confederate ingenuity. Early in the war President Jefferson Davis realized the Confederacy's need to supply its own gunpowder. Accordingly Davis selected Col. George Washington Rains to build a gunpowder factory. An engineer and West Point graduate, Rains relied primarily on a written pamphlet rather than on practical experience in building the powder mill, yet he succeeded in designing a model of efficiency and safety. He sited the facilities at Augusta, Georgia, because of the city's central location, canal transportation, access to water power, railroad facilities, and relative security from attack. As much a story of people as of machinery, Never for Want of Powder recounts the ingenuity of the individuals involved with the project. A cadre of talented subordinates--including Frederick Wright, C. Shaler Smith, William Pendleton, and Isadore P. Girardey--assisted Rains to a degree not previously appreciated by historians. Gunpowder studies are still in their infancy despite the long-standing civil and military importance of this explosive since its discovery in China in the mid-ninth century AD. In this second volume by contributors who meet regularly at symposia of the International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC), the research is again rooted in the investigation of the technology of explosives manufacture, but the fact that the chapters range in scope from the Old World to the New, from sources of raw materials in south-east Asia to the complications of manufacture in the West, shows that the story is more than the simple one of how an intriguing product was made. This volume is the first to develop the implications of the subject, not just in the sense of relating it to changing military technologies, but in that of seeing the securing of gunpowder supplies as fundamental to the power of the state and imperial pretensions.The search for saltpetre, for example, an essential ingredient of gunpowder, became a powerful engine of sea-going European trade from the early seventeenth century. Smaller states like Venice were unable to form these distant connections, and so to sustain a gunpowder army. Stronger states like France and Britain were able to do so, and became even more powerful as the demand for improved explosives fostered national strengths - leading to a development of the sciences, especially chemistry, in the former case, and of manufacturing techniques in the latter.
