Book Description
Excerpt from Palestine, Past and Present: With Biblical, Literary, and Scientific Notices But all these terrors and beauties are considered the natural consequences of sea-life, and seem to lead the souls Of many to find the cause of the one in nothing stronger than a hard wind, and of the other in nothing higher than a blue sky. It is strange that so little true religion, with so faint an acknowledgment of God, exists among sea-faring men, around whom such mighty motives are incessantly gathering. The distance from Cape Clear - the most southern point of Ireland - to Liverpool is three hundred miles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Holy Land and Holy Writ There is no originality in this linking together of the Bible and Palestine on our title page. It has been gracefully done by both Thomson and Geikie. In fact it can hardly be avoided; for the book, to be understood, must be illustrated by the habits of the people among whom it was written, and to be beautiful, must be illustrated by the vistas of Palestine's moun tains, plains, and waters; and on the other hand, the land would be a most unprofitable one for the traveler in saddle or in spirit, without its life history and without the halo that Scripture hangs around it. Book Description
Excerpt from Palestine in the Time of Christ There is one conclusion, however, which I have not been able to refrain from expressing, because it forced itself upon me with ever deepening conviction as the work proceeded. I have given it in the form of an appendix in the last chapter. It is in substance this Jesus Christ was not the natural product of His environ ment; His appearance was a miracle; He came from God. Hence it is that a book of history, a work which is only a record of archaeological observations, subserves, by virtue of the invincible logic of facts, the cause of Christian apologetics. It has indeed been said, that my closing chapter is insufficient; that it should either not have been written, or the question should have been treated in greater fulness. I cannot accept this criticism, because, as I have already said, this chapter seemed to force itself upon me as the natural conclusion of my. Book. But I freely admit that what is still wanting is not one chapter on the'christ, but a complete study of His teaching, His person and work, written in the spirit of the present volume on strictly historic lines. This would require a book to itself, and in this sense the last chapter of the present work is undoubtedly incomplete. It is only a point of departure, the introduction to a volume to be occupied. Wholly with Christ Himself. Some day perhaps I may be privileged to attempt this, and to add my testimony to that of so many others, as to what the Christ was in His proper environment and in the critical age in which He lived. Book Description
Excerpt from The Holy Land and the Bible, Vol. 1: A Book of Scripture Illustrations Gathered in Palestine I must urge it in explanation of my adding to the already copious literature treating, from one aspect or another, of the Holy Land, that the aim I have had in view in writing this book has been different from that of nearlyr every other work on Palestine, and that, if I have been able to carry it out successfully, the result should unquestionably prove very useful. Book Description
Excerpt from The Holy Land and the Bible, Vol. 2: A Book of Scripture Illustrations Gathered in Palestine The tradition of the Jews, current in our Lord's day, associated with this monument the Prophet Zechariah, who was stoned, by command Of King J oash, in the court Of the house Of the Lord; 1 and it may well be that Christ was looking down upon it from the Temple courts close above, on the Opposite side Of the valley, when He ad dressed the Pharisees, with whom He had been disputing in the bitter words: Woe untoyou, scribes and Phari sees, hypocrites! Because ye build the tombs of the pro phets, and. Garnish the sepulchres Of the righteous Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the children Of them which killed the prophets. 2 I noticed square holes in the rock on the south side, probably the sockets in which the masons rested the beams Of the scaffold while they were cutting out the tomb. The so-called Tomb Of Absalom is the most stately Of the four monuments. It is forty-seven feet high, and nearly twenty feet square hewn. Like that Of Zechariah. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bible and the Bible Country The aim of the writer of these lessons has been to give in formation; and also, as still more important, to kindle a desire for information. It has been to impart, but still more to stimulate and arouse. It has been, not so much to urge upon young minds knowledge for which very likely they have no hunger, as to create hunger, by making them aware how many valuable and intensely interesting things there are to be found out, which they do not now know. In other words, his aim has been, not primarily to give to pupils a certain number of facts, however valuable, about the Bible and the land from which the Bible came, but rather to awaken in them a keen and real interest in Palestine, on account of its historic importance, and especially to make them feel that the Bible is a very living and a very great book, about which it is worth their while to learn all they possibly can. To accomplish this, a constant appeal has been made to the pupils' own intelligence, to their own ability to think and judge and find out things for themselves, and, above all, to their imagination.
