Book Description
Paddington Station in London is one of Britains most splendid and historically significant railway termini, as the home and headquarters of the Great Western Railway, and as one of the masterpieces of its chief engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (180659). Steven Brindles comprehensive history, the first full-length study of the station to be published, first appeared in 2004. Around the same time, in the course of research for the book, the author discovered Brunels earliest surviving cast-iron bridge, which spanned the Regents Canal just outside the station but had hitherto been unrecognised, just in time to prevent its destruction for a major new road bridge and negotiate its salvage by dismantling. The second edition of the book, richly illustrated from a wealth of historic sources and now published in a larger format, has been updated to take account of a series of momentous recent developments at Paddington: the reprieve and restoration of the stations Edwardian fourth span; the project to create a new entrance on its north side; and the impending redevelopment of its south side to serve as one of the principal stations on the new Crossrail route across London. The book concludes with a detailed account of the project to rebuild the Bishops Road Bridge project and the authors discovery and salvage of Brunels iron canal bridge: a rare instance when writing the history of a historic place directly influenced its future, and led to the saving of a unique part of the past.

Bestselling Caldecott Honor artist David Shannon tells the story of a determined duck who decides to jump on a tractor and drive it around the barnyard and through town, with hilarious consequences! Now Duck is back and turning the farm upside down! Flushed with the success of his trailblazing bike ride around the farm, Duck decides he's ready to drive the tractor. As in the bestselling Duck on a Bike, all the barnyard animals share their humorous comments as they watch Duck do the unthinkable. Then, one by one, they join him on the tractor for a ride! But what happens when Duck drives the big red tractor through town, past the popular diner where all the locals are having lunch? What will those folks really think when they see Duck and all the other animals riding around on Farmer O'Dell's tractor? Filled with entertaining detail and sly jokes, readers will pore over each picture again and again. Perfect for reading aloud!

Built as part of the massive expansion of Great Britain's railway network during the nineteenth century, London's thirteen mainline railway stations are proud symbols of the nation's industrial and architectural heritage. Produced in association with The National Archives, and profusely illustrated with period photographs and diagrams, London Railway Stations tells the story of these iconic stations and of the people who created them and used them. Though built in an age of steam, smoke, gas lamps and horses, most retain features of their original design. This book will bring new light to these old buildings, and help you to see London's mainline stations through new eyes. Lavishly illustrated with black & white and some colour photographs.

Living Faith PDF Author: Stephen W. Need
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725255170
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
Desperate for new ideas to inspire sermons, Bible studies, or private meditation? Here’s the book for you. Living Faith: Through the Church’s Year offers fifty-two lively reflections for group or individual use, including resources for further study. Part One leads you through the seasons of the church’s year from Advent to Trinity. Starting with the Big Bang, you’re taken to Bethlehem for Christmas and into the desert for Lent. Christmas cribs, Easter gardens, and a large crucifix illustrate some of the most important Christian festivals. Bible texts, literature, architecture, poetry, and music all help fill out the picture. Part Two takes you into some crucial aspects of being a Christian. Jesus’s question to his disciples at Caesarea Philippi (“Who do you say that I am?”) helps you think about some important Gospel stories such as the stilling of the storm and the Samaritan woman. Key saints, such as Francis, Benedict, and Dominic, appear, as do C. S. Lewis, J. S. Bach, Mother Teresa, Simon and Garfunkel, and Paddington Bear! A sumptuous feast of exploration and insight, Living Faith is an exciting and stimulating adventure in Christian life—a must for anyone taking the journey of faith seriously.
