Public Secrets and Private Sufferings in the South African AIDS Epidemic

Public Secrets and Private Sufferings in the South African AIDS Epidemic PDF Author: Jonathan Stadler
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030694372
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
This book tells the story of the HIV epidemic in South Africa, and asks why, after more than three decades, it has not normalised. Despite considerable efforts to prevent infection, and ambitious targets set to end the epidemic by 2030, HIV infections are increasing among young women and treatment uptake and adherence have been uneven. Focusing on the years preceding and following treatment access, this book addresses why an end to AIDS may be misplaced optimism. By examining public discourses and private narratives about infection, illness and death, this work reveals the contradictions between the lived experiences of AIDS suffering on the one hand, and biomedical certainties on the other. Based on long-term ethnographic research in rural villages of the South African lowveld, and within HIV prevention interventions in South Africa more generally, this book offers an intimate perspective on the social and cultural responses to the epidemic.

ISBN:
Category : Biography
Languages : en

Book Description
Few world figures can have so extra-ordinary a tale to tell of their childhood and young manhood as Mao Tse-Tung: it is a life story that belongs to a poet or a philosopher rather than a political leader, and it has already the quality of myth. But Sia-Yu's story is no myth. He was there. He and Mao were beggars.

Postmigration

Postmigration PDF Author: Anna Meera Gaonkar
Publisher: transcript Verlag
ISBN: 3839448409
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 349

Book Description
The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.
