Book Description
'Outsourcing' - when will the horror stories stop coming? Every year the government gives private companies like G4S, Serco, Capita and ATOS £80 billion of taxpayers' money to handle some of our most sensitive and important services - but where is their transparency? Immigration is perhaps the most challenging and divisive issue of our time - so why has our government abdicated responsibility? As privatisation looms over an NHS in crisis, how do we hold these companies to account? Now, White speaks to campaigners, Whitehall insiders - and the companies themselves. On the Attractiveness of the UK for Outsourcing Services

On the Attractiveness of the UK for Outsourcing Services PDF Author: Ilan Oshri
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Outsourcing has entered what the industry is positioning as a new era of value-added services, innovation and transformation. This means that a shift of emphasis is underway towards skills, sector expertise and business transformation and away from mere technical solutions. Competition between the countries that supply outsourcing services is intensifying as the market moves away from its historic focus on slashing costs and towards providing superior technical and managerial skills, strategic guidance, and operational excellence. So where does the UK stand in all of this? The UK has long been a lucrative outsourcing market in that it is both the world's second largest consumer of outsourcing services and a major hub for global ITO and BPO vendors that want to sell services into Europe, including into the UK itself. However, the global shift away from low-cost solutions and towards higher value professional services is also enabling the UK to position itself as a global provider of outsourcing services and not just as a customer for them. In this new environment, and despite its high cost base, the UK may be well positioned to capitalise on this shift in focus, given the high level of business and managerial skills that it offers and also given its proximity, in many senses, to the massive US market. In this article, we explore the attractiveness of the UK, as an example of a Western economy, for outsourcing services. Full paper available at https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-11367-8_10.

Disaster Capitalism

Disaster Capitalism PDF Author: Antony Loewenstein
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1784781169
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 443

Book Description
A “keenly observed and timely investigation” of how capitalism makes a fortune from disaster, poverty and catastrophe—“a potent weapon for shock resistors around the world” (Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine) Disaster has become big business. Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Britain, Greece, and Australia to witness the reality of disaster capitalism. He discovers how companies cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining. What emerges through Loewenstein’s reporting is a dark history of multinational corporations that, with the aid of media and political elites, have grown more powerful than national governments. In the twenty-first century, the vulnerable have become the world’s most valuable commodity.

What a waste

What a waste PDF Author: Mick Moran
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1784992402
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 129

Book Description
This is the first ever book to analyse outsourcing – contracting out public services to private business interests. It is an unacknowledged revolution in the British economy, and it has happened quietly, but it is creating powerful new corporate interests, transforming the organisation of government at all levels, and is simultaneously enriching a new business elite and creating numerous fiascos in the delivery of public services. What links the brutal treatment of asylum-seeking detainees, the disciplining of welfare benefit claimants, the profits effortlessly earned by the privatised rail companies, and the fiasco of the management of security at the 2012 Olympics? In a word: outsourcing. This book, by the renowned research team at the Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change in Manchester, is the first to combine ‘follow the money’ research with accessibility for the engaged citizen, and the first to balance critique with practical suggestions for policy reform.
