Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Mathematical Science: For the School-Room The work is but an analysis, in an abridged form, of that system of mathematical instruction which has been steadily pursued at the Military Academy over a third of a century, and which has given to that institution its celebrity as a school of mathematical science. It is the essence of this system that a principle be taught before it is applied to practice - that Science should precede Art - and that general laws and gen eral principles are the only true foundations of knowledge. Where, then, for the instruction of the young, can we find these laws and principles? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Henry's Outlines of Science The following series of lessons on the Elements of Science has been prepared to meet a want which has been strongly expressed to the Author by many of the multitude of teachers who have done him the honour to adopt his other educational works. Without attempting a complete epitome of any of the sciences discussed, it is hoped that sufficient information is given to render the book a good introduction to a fuller study of the subjects. Pains have been taken to direct attention as far as possible to what are called common things. Numerous questions on the text have been added. Outlines of General Chemistry (Classic Reprint)

Outlines of General Chemistry (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Wilhelm Ostwald
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484039031

Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of General Chemistry This book has been written mainly to supply a want felt in my own teaching experience. It is designed to meet the requirements of the student who, while not intending to devote himself to the detailed study of General Chemistry, still wishes to follow intelligently the progress recently made in this important branch of science. Numerous assurances of my colleagues have convinced me that there is an actual demand for such a work. In conformity with this design, I have abstained as far as possible from the use of mathematical formulae, and have always striven after clearness of exposition. The task has been all the more dificult that the course of study still pursued by the average chemist has laid upon me the necessity of avoiding the employment of higher mathematics. When possible, I have applied graphic methods: when a clear proof could not be given in an elementary way, I have contented myself with simply stating the result. Of course one can with the help of more or less cumbrous mathematical apparatus give an elementary proof of almost anything; but experience has shown that such diffuse page-long calculations are of no real aid to the comprehension of the subject. Another reason that has led me to adopt the above mode of treatment is that the reader who has only an acquaintance with elementary mathematics may be brought to see the necessity of acquiring at least the rudiments of the higher analysis. Without such knowledge it is possible (as I have endeavoured to show in the following pages) to understand both the methods and the results of General Chemistry; but for successful work in this field such know ledge is indispensable. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Chemistry, the Was Every teacher of Chemistry must have felt the want of a com pact text-book, the price of which might place it within the reach of every student; and it is the long-felt sense of this want which has led me to compile these Outlines. The importance, to begin ners, of having some such guide, and some such help to the memory, cannot, I believe, be over-estimated. Some apology, or explanation at least, may seem to be required for the omission of certain subjects, usually treated of in element ary works on Chemistry. I allude to the subjects of Heat, Light, Electricity, and Magnetism: in short, to the Imponderables. It is not without ample consideration that I have taken this step.
