Black Firefighters and the FDNY
Author: David Goldberg
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469633639
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 422
Book Description
For many African Americans, getting a public sector job has historically been one of the few paths to the financial stability of the middle class, and in New York City, few such jobs were as sought-after as positions in the fire department (FDNY). For over a century, generations of Black New Yorkers have fought to gain access to and equal opportunity within the FDNY. Tracing this struggle for jobs and justice from 1898 to the present, David Goldberg details the ways each generation of firefighters confronted overt and institutionalized racism. An important chapter in the histories of both Black social movements and independent workplace organizing, this book demonstrates how Black firefighters in New York helped to create affirmative action from the "bottom up," while simultaneously revealing how white resistance to these efforts shaped white working-class conservatism and myths of American meritocracy. Full of colorful characters and rousing stories drawn from oral histories, discrimination suits, and the archives of the Vulcan Society (the fraternal society of Black firefighters in New York), this book sheds new light on the impact of Black firefighters in the fight for civil rights.

Smoke Your Firefighter Written Exam
Author: Paul S. Lepore
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780972993487
Category : Fire extinction
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
Most fire departments give a written examination as the first part of the testing process. Since there are usually an enormous number of candidates who apply for the position, difficult written examinations are an effective way to narrow the field. There is no excuse for a firefighter candidate to fail a written exam. Those who are committed to their goal will plan and prepare for the written exam to improve their chances of success. While there are other self-help books devoted to helping aspiring firefighters, they only provide questions and answers. These books are useless if you do not understand how to work out the problems. Smoke Your Firefighter Written Exam goes beyond providing sample questions and answers. It teaches the reader the basic rules and principles behind the questions; in other words, how to solve each complex problem. Each section begins with an overview of how to solve the problem. The reasoning behind the correct answer is presented in clear, easy-to-understand language. The reader will become proficient in: mathematics (word problems, geometry, addition, subtraction, multiplication); mechanical aptitude (gears, levers, pulleys, incline planes, screws); language (reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary); perceptual ability; spatial relations; matching parts and figures; map reading. Illustrations are used throughout the book to teach basic principles and present problems to solve.
