Book Description
To find out why Pope Francis is making Oscar Romero a saint, read the words that cost him his life. "A church that does not provoke crisis, a gospel that does not disturb, a word of God that does not touch the concrete sin of the society in which it is being proclaimed - what kind of gospel is that?" Three short years transformed El Salvador's Archbishop Oscar Romero from a defender of the status quo into one of the most outspoken voices of the oppressed. An assassin's bullet ended his life, but his message lives on. In March 2018 Pope Francis announced that the Catholic Church would canonize Oscar Romero, acknowledging that he is indeed a saint who was martyred for proclaiming the gospel, and that the political and social implications of that message, which so scandalized the powerful, flowed directly from Romero's faithfulness to the teachings of Jesus. These selections from Romero's diaries and radio broadcasts invite each of us to align our own lives with the way of Jesus that lifts up the poor, welcomes the broken, wins over enemies, and transforms the history of entire nations.

To Know as I Am Known

To Know as I Am Known PDF Author: Mark McLeod-Harrison
Publisher: Vernon Press
ISBN: 9781622734757
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
The doctrine of the communion of the saints is central in the spiritual lives and theology of millions of Christians but has received no philosophical analysis in contemporary times. McLeod-Harrison¿s book changes that. Taking on two related puzzles inherent in the doctrine itself the book proposes a means of solving those puzzles. After providing an account of human nature and sin, the essay suggests a way of thinking of love that is rooted both in the doctrine of the Trinity and in the thought of several contemporary analytic thinkers, along with Dostoyevsky, Eckerd, Royce, and others. While the problems inherent in the doctrine are related to the ¿why-be-moral¿ problem, McLeod-Harrison shows that the challenges of the doctrine arise from the unique nature of agape (divine love). The communion of the saints comes through the challenges intact with a plausible interpretation of saintly motivation and human solidarity. Dr. Plows¿ research approach can be summarised as reflexive and participatory `action research¿ informed by environmental and social justice frameworks. Many of her current research projects are focused on interdisciplinary, participatory research and knowledge exchange, particularly at the interface of social science and environmental studies, such as human/nature relationships, and associated practices and values. She works with a wide range of disciplines and `communities of place and interest.¿
