Book Description
Excerpt from No. 130 Price List; Fall 1928-Spring 1929, Vol. 82: Ornamental Trees and Plants for Home Grounds and Other Landscape Gardening, Fruit Trees for Commercial Orchards and Home Gardens In the spring when the temperature reaches a certain point and moisture _conditions are right, sap starts to flow through dormant plants, and buds swell and break, produ'cing new leaves and shoots. Growth has started. This change from inactivity to vigorous growth takes place in the few warm days following winter. Afterwards it is difficult to transplant trees or shrubs without killing them or at least seriously harm ing their growth. If, however, these plants are taken out of the ground in the fall as soon as they become dormant, placed in a cool dark cellar where the humidity is correct and the temperature is kept fairly constant, they will lie there alive but making no growth for the next year or until removed and then will burst forth in full vigor.
