Origination of Organismal Form PDF Author: Gerd B. Muller

Book Description
A more comprehensive version of evolutionary theory that focuses as much on the origin of biological form as on its diversification. The field of evolutionary biology arose from the desire to understand the origin and diversity of biological forms. In recent years, however, evolutionary genetics, with its focus on the modification and inheritance of presumed genetic programs, has all but overwhelmed other aspects of evolutionary biology. This has led to the neglect of the study of the generative origins of biological form. Drawing on work from developmental biology, paleontology, developmental and population genetics, cancer research, physics, and theoretical biology, this book explores the multiple factors responsible for the origination of biological form. It examines the essential problems of morphological evolution—why, for example, the basic body plans of nearly all metazoans arose within a relatively short time span, why similar morphological design motifs appear in phylogenetically independent lineages, and how new structural elements are added to the body plan of a given phylogenetic lineage. It also examines discordances between genetic and phenotypic change, the physical determinants of morphogenesis, and the role of epigenetic processes in evolution. The book discusses these and other topics within the framework of evolutionary developmental biology, a new research agenda that concerns the interaction of development and evolution in the generation of biological form. By placing epigenetic processes, rather than gene sequence and gene expression changes, at the center of morphological origination, this book points the way to a more comprehensive theory of evolution.

Mathematical Macroevolution in Diatom Research

Mathematical Macroevolution in Diatom Research PDF Author: Janice L. Pappas
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119750652
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 587

Book Description
MATHEMATICAL MACROEVOLUTION IN DIATOM RESEARCH Buy this book to learn how to use mathematics in macroevolution research and apply mathematics to study complex biological problems. This book contains recent research in mathematical and analytical studies on diatoms. These studies reflect the complex and intricate nature of the problems being analyzed and the need to use mathematics as an aid in finding solutions. Diatoms are important components of marine food webs, the silica and carbon cycles, primary productivity, and carbon sequestration. Their uniqueness as glass-encased unicells and their presence throughout geologic history exemplifies the need to better understand such organisms. Explicating the role of diatoms in the biological world is no more urgent than their role as environmental and climate indicators, and as such, is aided by the mathematical studies in this book. The volume contains twelve original research papers as chapters. Macroevolutionary science topics covered are morphological analysis, morphospace analysis, adaptation, food web dynamics, origination-extinction and diversity, biogeography, life cycle dynamics, complexity, symmetry, and evolvability. Mathematics used in the chapters include stochastic and delay differential and partial differential equations, differential geometry, probability theory, ergodic theory, group theory, knot theory, statistical distributions, chaos theory, and combinatorics. Applied sciences used in the chapters include networks, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and dynamical systems. The volume covers a diverse range of mathematical treatments of topics in diatom research. Audience Diatom researchers, mathematical biologists, evolutionary and macroevolutionary biologists, paleontologists, paleobiologists, theoretical biologists, as well as researchers in applied mathematics, algorithm sciences, complex systems science, computational sciences, informatics, computer vision and image processing sciences, nanoscience, the biofuels industry, and applied engineering.

Accounting for Nonrefundable Fees and Costs Associated with Originating Mortgages

Accounting for Nonrefundable Fees and Costs Associated with Originating Mortgages PDF Author: Ronnie J. Clayton
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Accounting
Languages : en
Pages : 56

Book Description
This paper discusses several conceptual and empirical issues regarding alternative methods of accounting for discount points on mortgages. Methods widely used by lenders prior to 1988 tend to bring deferred fee income into earnings more rapidly than FASB believes is economically justified. While FASB concedes that prepayments on mortgages do reduce the amount of time that loan fees should be deferred, their suggested remedy is quite cumbersome to apply. For this reason, two alternative accounting techniques are presented and discussed in detail. The cash flows of institutions are not directly affected by the method use to account for deferred loan fees. Although simulations show that various accounting methods do yield significantly different results, the method chosen will neither save nor destroy that thrift industry. S&Ls' economic performance will continue to be driven by their ability to handle the basic maturity mismatch between their assets and liabilities.

Timing and Temporality in Islamic Philosophy and Phenomenology of Life

Timing and Temporality in Islamic Philosophy and Phenomenology of Life PDF Author: Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Book Description
The puzzling nature of temporality and timing of reality remains controversial. This book offers a collection of studies that seeks a new answer by initiating a novel investigation informed by the ancient wisdom of the Greaco-Arabic-Islamic sources and inheritance, on the one side, and the contemporary discernment of Occidental phenomenology of life, on the other, in a common dialogical effort to unravel this great enigma of existence.
