Book Description
The 2012 International Symposium on Management Intelligent Systems is believed to be the first international forum to present and discuss original, rigorous and significant contributions on Artificial Intelligence-based (AI) solutions—with a strong, practical logic and, preferably, with empirical applications—developed to aid the management of organizations in multiple areas, activities, processes and problem-solving; i.e., what we propose to be named as Management Intelligent Systems (MiS). The three-day event aimed to bring together researchers interested in this promising interdisciplinary field who came from areas as varied as management, marketing, and business in general, computer science, artificial intelligence, statistics, etc. This volume presents the proceedings of these activities in a collection of contributions with many original approaches. They address diverse Management and Business areas of application such as decision support, segmentation of markets, CRM, product design, service personalization, organizational design, e-commerce, credit scoring, workplace integration, innovation management, business database analysis, workflow management, location of stores, etc. A wide variety of AI techniques have been applied to these areas such as multi-objective optimization and evolutionary algorithms, classification algorithms, ant algorithms, fuzzy rule-based systems, intelligent agents, Web mining, neural networks, Bayesian models, data warehousing, rough sets, etc. The symposium was organized by the Soft Computing and Intelligent Information Systems Research Group (http://sci2s.ugr.es) of the University of Granada (Spain) and the Bioinformatics, Intelligent System and Educational Technology Research Group (http://bisite.usal.es/) of the University of Salamanca (Spain). The present edition is held in Salamanca (Spain) on July 11-13, 2012.

Decision Support in Organizational Transformation
Author: Patrick Humphreys
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0387353488
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion about the design of computer and communication systems that can aid the management process. 1.1 Historical Overview We propose that Decision Support System can be considered as a design conception conceived within the computer industry to facilitate the use of computer technology in organisations (Keen, 1991). This framework, built during the late 1970s, offers computer and communication technology as support to the decision process which constitutes, in this view, the core of the management process. The DSS framework offers the following capabilities: • Access: ease of use, wide variety of data, analysis and modelling capacity. • Technological: software gel)eration tools. • Development modes: interactive and evolutionary. Within this perspective, computer and communication technologies are seen as an amplification of the human data processing capabilities which limit the decision process. Thus, the human being is understood metaphorically as a data processing machine. Mental processes are associated with the manipulation of symbols aOO human communication to signal transmission.

A Systems Approach to Social and Organizational Planning
Author: Gerrit Van Wyk
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1412013909
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
"A Systems Approach to Social And Organizational Planning is about systems thinking and its application in health care. Health care systems all over the world are on the verge of breakdown and neither patients nor governments and businesses can afford health care delivery as we know it any longer. The problem is that planners still conceptualize enormously complex biological and social systems in a simplistic manner. An analysis of the problem indicates that the solution lies in using a holistic apporoach, such as the systems approach, to re-conceptualize our thinking about the problem situation. The result is a systems view of health, which has profound implications for planning and change management in health care. It is a fresh and different approach to an intractable problem and therefore deserves the attention of both systems thinkers and health care planners. The purpose of the text is to introduce readers to the systems approach and to contribute towards the current debate about health care planning. The target audience is therefore students new to systems thinking and specifically health care planners."--Publisher.

Book Description
Rapid globalization coupled with the growth of the Internet and Information Technology (IT) has led toa complete transformation in the way businesses or organizations function today. This has not only affectedthe management culture but has also led to an increase in competition in terms of markets and resources.Businesses have become more customer-driven and e-business is gaining popularity. Traditional means ofcommunication/correspondence have given way to online dealings, e-mails and chats. With such a radicalshift in the approach to doing business, came the need for specialized systems to handle the variousdepartments and functions in an organization.Management Information System or MIS is an organized and well-structured system used by organizationsfor the collection, storage, processing and dissemination of data in the form of information that facilitatesthe smooth functioning of the organization. Management information systems involve three primaryresources: people, technology and information or decision-making.It is in this context, a textbook on introduction to the subject of MIS is presented to the students ofManagement program. The book contains the syllabus from basics of the subjects going into the intricaciesof the subjects. All the concepts have been explained with relevant examples and diagrams to make itinteresting for the readers. An attempt is made here by the experts to assist the students by way of providing case based studymaterial as per the curriculum with non-commercial considerations. Management and Office Information Systems
Author: Shi-Kuo Chang
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146132677X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 472
Book Description
Decision making is a very complex phenomenon. Modern decision makers must deal with very complex problems which are constantly changing and often ill structured, making modeling and analysis difficult. In order to provide support for the decision makers, computer-based information systems are designed to collect, store, process, and transport information. Recent advances in computer technol ogy, data communications, database systems, office automation, and knowledge engineering have made possible the design of very sophisticated information sys tems. However, rapid technological advances also create many problems, not the least of which is the lack of integration among the various disciplines in infor mation system design. Without such integration, a costly computer-based infor mation system is at best partially useful and at worst totally useless. The aim of this book, therefore, is to examine the various issues involved in designing man agement information systems, decision support systems, and office information systems for increasing productivity and providing decision support. This book is the outcome of the Workshop on Management and Office Infor mation Systems, which was organized by the Knowledge Systems Institute and held at Chicago, Illinois, from June 28 to 30, 1982. Twenty-seven papers from the working papers presented at that workshop were selected for inclusion in the present volume, which is organized into five parts: (I) organization structures and management, (II) decision support systems, (III) database systems, (IV) office information systems, and (V) systems and applications.
