Book Description
The method of Time Domain Structural Synthesis is reviewed and examples of linear structural modification and sub-structure coupling are presented. The general formulation for both linear and nonlinear syntheses are compared to highlight the similarities between the two and the difficulties experienced with the introduction of nonlinear elements. Examples of linear and nonlinear sub-structural coupling are presented to emphasize the similarity of the procedures used. Finally, a general approach for the optimal design of nonlinear shock isolation for large structural systems is developed. The repeated solution of arbitrarily large finite element models with localized nonlinear components is made possible through the use of a highly efficient nonlinear transient re-analysis procedure. The method has demonstrated order of magnitude decreases in compute time over traditional direct integration methods and is exact, regardless of the nature of the isolation. An example is included which demonstrates the procedure.

Time and Frequency Domain Synthesis in the Optimal Design of Shock and Vibration Isolation for Large Structural Systems

Time and Frequency Domain Synthesis in the Optimal Design of Shock and Vibration Isolation for Large Structural Systems PDF Author: Dennis E. Florence
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Finite element method
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
The dynamic analysis of large, complex structural systems is computationally intensive and therefore prohibits the use of optimization procedures, which are both iterative and complex with respect to variable search patterns. The solution to this problem is through the use of time and frequency synthesis techniques. They provide a means of rapidly recalculating a system's changed response due to structural modifications, as dictated by the optimization procedure. The efficiency is gained through the fact that the synthesis methods are independent of model size, in that only those model degrees of freedom where changes are made are required in the analysis. Furthermore, these methods are exact in their formulation, including the treatment of non- proportional damping. These structural synthesis techniques are developed in the context of optimal design of shock and vibration isolation systems. Their utility and value is demonstrated in the optimal design of an isolation system for a 109 dof non-proportionally damped structural system. In the course of the optimization, the synthesis techniques make possible 80 transient, frequency response, and static analyses in 2 hours and 39 minutes (desktop computer), while yielding an isolation design which satisfies all design constraints.

Nonlinear Targeted Energy Transfer in Mechanical and Structural Systems

Nonlinear Targeted Energy Transfer in Mechanical and Structural Systems PDF Author: Alexander F. Vakakis

Languages : en
Pages : 1030

Book Description
This monograph evolved over a period of nine years from a series of papers and presentations addressing the subject of passive vibration control of mechanical s- tems subjected to broadband, transient inputs. The unifying theme is Targeted - ergy Transfer – TET, which represents a new and unique approach to the passive control problem, in which a strongly nonlinear, fully passive, local attachment, the Nonlinear Energy Sink – NES, is employed to drastically alter the dynamics of the primary system to which it is attached. The intrinsic capacity of the properly - signed NES to promote rapid localization of externally applied (narrowband) - bration or (broadband) shock energy to itself, where it can be captured and dis- pated, provides a powerful strategy for vibration control and the opens the pos- bility for a wide range of applications of TET, such as, vibration and shock i- lation, passive energy harvesting, aeroelastic instability (?utter) suppression, se- mic mitigation, vortex shedding control, enhanced reliability designs (for ex- ple in power grids) and others. The monograph is intended to provide a thorough explanation of the analytical, computational and experimental methods needed to formulate and study TET in mechanical and structural systems. Several prac- cal engineering applications are examined in detail, and experimental veri?cation and validation of the theoretical predictions are provided as well. The authors also suggest a number of possible future applications where application of TET seems promising. The authors are indebted to a number of sponsoring agencies.

Efficient Nonlinear Transient Dynamic Analysis for Structural Optimization Using an Exact Integral Equation Formulation

Efficient Nonlinear Transient Dynamic Analysis for Structural Optimization Using an Exact Integral Equation Formulation PDF Author: Joshua H. Gordis
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Earthquake resistant design
Languages : en
Pages : 77

Book Description
This report serves to document progress made to date on the National Science Foundation Project #97-13481, Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Program. The focus of this phase of the project is the development of an improved solution algorithm for fast transient analysis of large, locally nonlinear structures using time domain structural synthesis. The report documents the development of several algorithms intended to improve upon the original algorithm developed by the first author. The last algorithm developed meets the stated goals of the project. This algorithm is a newly developed recursive, block by block convolution solution to the governing nonlinear integral equation. As is demonstrated with a realistically large nonlinear base excitation problem (51, 300 DOF finite element model), the new algorithm provides a 78% reduction in time required for the nonlinear transient base excitation solution, as compared with traditional direct integration. The new algorithm provides an even greater reduction in computer time for subsequent analysis. The nonlinear base isolation solutions calculated using the new algorithm take approximately 7 seconds, as compared with the direct integration solution which takes approximately 30 minutes. The rapid reanalysis capability will facilitate the development of numerical optimization for the design of nonlinear isolation. The theory of transient synthesis is documented, along with a new proof of the exponential convergence properties of an iterative solution to the governing nonlinear integral equation.
