Introduction to Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators

Introduction to Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators PDF Author: S. C. Bloch
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118710827
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 343

Book Description
From conch shells to lasers . harmonic oscillators, the timeless scientific phenomenon As intriguing to Galileo as they are to scientists today, harmonic oscillators have provided a simple and compelling paradigm for understanding the complexities that underlie some of nature's and mankind's most fascinating creations. From early string and wind instruments fashioned from bows and seashells to the intense precision of lasers, harmonic oscillators have existed in various forms, as objects of beauty and scientific use. And harmonic oscillation has endured as one of science's most fascinating concepts, key to understanding the physical universe and a linchpin in fields as diverse as mechanics, electromagnetics, electronics, optics, acoustics, and quantum mechanics. Complete with disk, Introduction to Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators is a hands-on guide to understanding how harmonic oscillators function and the analytical systems used to describe them. Professionals and students in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and chemistry will gain insight in applying these analytical techniques to even more complex systems. With the help of spreadsheets ready to run on Microsoft Excel (or easily imported to Quattro Pro or Lotus 1-2-3), users will be able to thoroughly and easily examine concepts and questions, of considerable difficulty and breadth, without painstaking calculation. The software allows users to imagine, speculate, and ask "what if .?" and then instantly see the answer. You're not only able to instantly visualize results but also to interface with data acquisition boards to import real-world information. The graphic capability of the software allows you to view your work in color and watch new results blossom as you change parameters and initial conditions. Introduction to Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators is a practical, graphically enhanced excursion into the world of harmonic oscillators that lets the reader experience and understand their utility and unique contribution to scientific understanding. It also describes one of the enduring themes in scientific inquiry, begun in antiquity and with an as yet unimagined future.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade H. Shafer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468426044
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Quantum Chemistry

Quantum Chemistry PDF Author: Walter Kauzmann
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483270807
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 757

Book Description
Quantum Chemistry: An Introduction provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. This book presents the theory of partial differentiation equations by using the classical theory of vibrations as a means of developing physical insight into this essential branch of mathematics. Organized into five parts encompassing 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of how quantum mechanical deductions are made. This text then describes the achievements and limitations of the application of quantum mechanics to chemical problems. Other chapters provide a brief survey of some essential properties of the associated Legendre functions. The final chapter deals with the Franck-Condon principle, which states that transitions tend to occur between vibrational levels of two different electronic states for which either the minimum or maximum values of the internuclear distance in the potential energy diagram occur with the same nuclear configuration. This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

Electron Collisions with Molecules, Clusters, and Surfaces

Electron Collisions with Molecules, Clusters, and Surfaces PDF Author: H. Ehrhardt
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489914897
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
This volume contains the invited papers and selected contributed papers presented at the biennial International Symposium on ELECTRON COLLISIONS WITH MOLECULES, CLUSTERS AND SURF ACES held at Royal Holloway, University of London from 29th to 30th July, 1993. This Symposium was a Satellite Meeting of the XVIII International Conference on the Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC) and follows a 16 year tradition of Satellite Conferences in related areas of collisions held in association with previous ICPEAC's. In the past each of these electron -molecule symposia covered the broad field of electron-molecule scattering at rather low energies, but also included hot topics. This time as well as covering the whole field, well defined electron collisions with clusters and with particles in the complex potential of a surface were emphasized. Not many details are known about such collisions, although they become more and more important in surface characterisation, plasma-wall interactions, electron induced desorption and reorganisation of adsorbed particles. Recently, much work, theoretical and experimental, has been devoted to electron collisions with rather large carbon, silicon and halogen containing molecules. These problems are of relevance in plasma assisted thin film formation and etching of surfaces and can now be approached with advanced theoretical methods and experimental equipment.
