Book Description
The origin of optical methods for fluid flow investigations appears to be nontraceable. This is no matter for surprise. After all seeing provides the most direct and common way for humans to learn about their environment. But at the same time some of the most sophisticated methods for doing measurements in fluids are also based on light and often laser light. A very large amount of material has been published in this area over the last two decades. Why then another publication? Well, the field is still in a state of rapid development. It is characterised by the use of results and methods developed within very different areas like optical physics, spectroscopy, communication systems, electronics and computer science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and, of course, fluid dynamics. We are not aware of a book containing both introductory and more advanced material that covers the same material as presented here. The book is the result of a compilation and expansion of material presented at a summer school on Optical Diagnosticsfor Flow Processes,held at RiS0 National Laboratory and the Technical University of Denmark in September 1993. The aim of the course was to provide a solid background for understanding, evaluating, and using modem optical diagnostic methods, addressing Ph. D. students and researchers active in areas of fluid flow research. The disciplines represented by the participants ranged from atmospheric fluid dynamics to biomedicine.

Over the past several years, the Principal Investigator has made significant contributions to the to the understanding of compressible turbulent flows. He has utilized innovative modern optical diagnostics to explore (1) the turbulence structure of wall bounded shear layers, (2) the effects of extra strain rates, such as convex curvature and favorable pressure gradient, on the turbulence structure of wall bounded shear layers, (3) the effect of compressibility on the Reynolds stresses and the turbulence structure of free shear layers, and (4) control of supersonic jets. The latest state-of-the-art optical diagnostics that the PI has been using include Filtered Rayleigh Scattering (FRS) technique for flow visualizations, and Planar Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) technique for 4-instantaneous velocity measurements.

Studying turbulent combustion at the fundamental level is a primary requirement to construct robust, accurate, efficient models to predict the performance of complex combustion systems. Laser based diagnostics offer significant advantage of probing multiple facets of the combustion processes simultaneously and are capable of providing quantitative information of the highly coupled phenomenon. Design of a vitiated co-flow burner is presented for laser diagnostics of turbulent flames. A foundation was laid to be able to perform Rayleigh scattering, Coherent Ani-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy, Heterodyne velocimetry and Particle scattering. Experiment facilities were developed and tests were performed for feasibility, and performance of test equipment. The present work focused on developing facilities for combined diagnostics of, temperature, species, concentration and velocity measurement. Machine vision cameras were studied for their performance with Rayleigh scattering for temperature, high resolution spectrometer is put to test to resolve rotational/vibrational bands from chemiluminesence for species concentration. An optical design for Narrowband CARS is presented. An experimental setup for multiphase turbulent flow is presented and methods were developed for image analysis in a multiphase turbulent flow. An experimental setup for simultaneous measurement of gas species concentration, particle concentration and particle velocity is presented. The final section discusses analysis of diode lasers and optics to perform seedless Laser Heterodyne Velocimetry. The current work also discusses some of the common problems and solutions for laboratory experiments using laser diagnostics.
