Book Description
The surface of textiles offers an important platform for functional modifications in order to meet special requirements for a variety of applications. The surface modification of textiles may be achieved by various techniques ranging from traditional solution treatment to biological approaches. This book reviews fundamental issues relating to textile surfaces and their characterisation and explores the exciting opportunities for surface modification of a range of different textiles.Introductory chapters review some important surface modification techniques employed for improved functional behaviour of textiles and the various surface characterisation methods available. Further chapters examine the different types of surface modification suitable for textiles, ranging from the use of plasma treatments and physical vapour deposition to the use of nanoparticles. Concluding chapters discuss surface modification strategies for various applications of textiles.Surface modification of textiles is a valuable resource for chemists, surface scientists, textile technologists, fibre scientists, textile engineers and textile students. - Reviews fundamental issues relating to textiles surfaces and their characterisation - Examines various types of surface modification suitable for textiles, including plasma treatments and nanoparticles - Discusses surface modification strategies for textile applications such as expansion into technical textile applications

Nanoelectrodynamics

Nanoelectrodynamics PDF Author: Hitoshi Nejo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662050846
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Many books on mesoscopic systems have been published as progress has con tinued in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The focus in these books is mainly on quantum mechanical behavior in artificial electronic sys tems fabricated by nanometer-scale structuring. Such quantum mechanical behavior is projected to macroscopic observers and the quantum nature can be utilized in practical devices. Quantum computers, another hot topic nowa days, are characterized by excitation coherence properties among nanostruc tures, and the ability to maintain excitations is very important when using the characteristics as information. In that sense, the device is described as a microscopic system and some processes occur before being projected to macroscopic observers. In this book, the authors try to describe not only the techniques for fabricating nanostructures but also new directions as re gards exciting systems and understanding how energy is dissipated through observation. The idea of 'nano-electrodynamics' underlying the book is an analogy with the well-established classical electrodynamics. In contrast to the latter, 'nano-electrodynamics' is still in its infancy and far from well established. When a structure is miniaturized as a device, it is essential to have control over energy excitation and dissipation. Otherwise, when a device is squeezed down beyond a certain size and the energy dissipation becomes overwhelmed, the device will eventually collapse. It is our aim in this book to provide some thoughts on the task of making devices out of small structures.

Organic Nanophotonics

Organic Nanophotonics PDF Author: Fabrice Charra
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401001030
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 498

Book Description
Photonics concerns the generation, transport, processing and detection of light. It underlies a large amount of industrial activity, mainly devoted to information technology, telecommunications, environmental monitoring, biomedical science and instrumentation. The field has received a powerful impetus recently with the introduction of nanoscale concepts. Moreover, organic materials now appear as key components in photonic devices such as light-emitting diodes, integrated lasers, or photovoltaic cells. Organic molecular systems offer unique opportunities in nanophotonics since both top-down and bottom-up strategies can be pursued towards the nanoscale. This book gathers the proceedings of the NATO advanced research workshop on "Organic Nanophotonics", held in Aix-en-Provence, France, August 25-29, 2002. It constitutes a snapshot of the state of the art in the novel, emerging research area of nanophotonics based on organic molecules and materials.

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 008046789X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 339

Book Description
This book discusses the recent advances in the area of near-field Raman scattering, mainly focusing on tip-enhanced and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Some of the key features covered here are the optical structuring and manipulations, single molecule sensitivity, analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes, and analytic applications in chemistry, biology and material sciences. This book also discusses the plasmonic materials for better enhancement, and optical antennas. Further, near-field microscopy based on second harmonic generation is also discussed. Chapters have been written by some of the leading scientists in this field, who present some of their recent work in this field.·Near-field Raman scattering·Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy·Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy·Nano-photonics·Nanoanalysis of Physical, chemical and biological materials beyond the diffraction limits·Single molecule detection

Scanning Probe Microscopy and Spectroscopy

Scanning Probe Microscopy and Spectroscopy PDF Author: Roland Wiesendanger
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521428477
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 664

Book Description
The investigation and manipulation of matter on the atomic scale have been revolutionised by scanning tunnelling microscopy and related scanning probe techniques. This book is the first to provide a clear and comprehensive introduction to this subject. Beginning with the theoretical background of scanning tunnelling microscopy, the design and instrumentation of practical STM and associated systems are described in detail, as are the applications of these techniques in fields such as condensed matter physics, chemistry, biology, and nanotechnology. Containing 350 illustrations, and over 1200 references, this unique book represents an ideal introduction to the subject for final-year undergraduates in physics or materials science. It will also be invaluable to graduate students and researchers in any branch of science where scanning probe techniques are used.
