Book Description
The efficiency of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) energy conversion is dependent on efficient spectral control. An edge pass filter (short pass) in series with a highly doped, epitaxially grown layer has achieved the highest performance of TPV spectral control. Front surface, tandem filters have achieved the highest spectral efficiency and represent the best prospect for even higher spectral efficiency for TPV energy conversion systems. Specifically, improvements in the physical vapor deposition process, identification of other materials with a high index of refraction and a low absorption coefficient, and more efficient edge filter designs could provide higher TPV spectral performance.

Thin Film Optical Coatings for Effective Solar Energy Utilization

Thin Film Optical Coatings for Effective Solar Energy Utilization PDF Author: K. A. Gesheva

ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
The subject of the book is CVD thin film optical coatings for application in photothermal solar energy conversion. The specific character of the materials research in the area of thermal solar energy conversion is the necessity of large areas for interception of the solar flux. The interceptive surfaces meeting the solar flux are mainly thin film (for cost effective purposes) coatings and the price of their production should be very low. Besides, they must withstand high temperatures reaching in some applications 500 degrees C, and the film should be stable for a long time (15-20 years). The possible diffusion processes lead to structure changes in thin films and deterioration of optical properties. These coatings differ from the ones for thin film optics, where the applications are basically at room temperature. These coatings differ also from the microelectronics materials, where miniaturisation lowered the price.

ISBN: 3642199658
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 213

Book Description
Thermophotovoltaics is the science and technology associated with the direct generation of electricity from high temperature heat. Potential applications include combined heat and power, portable and auxiliary power, radioisotope space power, industrial waste heat recovery and concentrated solar power. This book aims at serving as an introduction to the underlying theory, overview of present day components and system arrangements, and update of the latest developments in the field. The emphasis is placed on the understanding of the critical aspects of efficient thermophotovoltaic system design. The aim is to assist researchers in the field.

Tandem Filter Development for Thermophotovoltaic Energy Conversion from January 2003 to February 2006

Book Description
The intent of this report is to summarize the tandem filter development for spectral control of thermophotovoltaic energy conversion from January 2003 to the termination of the program in February 2006 and to closeout tandem filter development in order to capture the knowledge gained from the development effort. Over the last three years, the goals of the tandem filter development have been the following: (1) Study the limits of the design of the interference optical coatings component of a tandem filter in order to develop higher performance designs; (2) Enhance the fabrication process of the optical interference coatings to increase the fidelity with the intended design and allow more complex, higher performing designs; (3) Support TPV module testing by providing tandem filters and assembly assistance; (4) Identify and develop materials for optical interference coatings that are stable at higher temperatures than current materials; and (5) Improve the understanding of the directional and spectral reflectance and transmittance characterization of the completed tandem filters to insure the veracity of the characterization data and to provide useful feedback to the tandem filter development process. This development effort has been a collaboration between KAPL and its contracted development partner, Rugate Technologies Inc.
