The UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions PDF Author: Sabine Schorlemer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642259952
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 772

Book Description
The 2005 UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity is a landmark agreement in modern international law of culture. It reflects the diverse and pluralist understanding of culture, as well as its growing commercial dimension. Thirty diplomats, practitioners and academics explain and assess this important agreement in a commentary style. Article by article, the evolution, concepts, contents and implications of the Convention are analysed in depth and are complemented by valuable recommendations for implementation. In an unprecedented way, the book draws on the first-hand insights of negotiators and on the experience of practitioners in implementation, including international cooperation, and combines this with a good deal of critical academic reflection. It is a valuable guide for those who deal with the Convention and its implementation in governments, diplomacy, international organizations, cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations and will also serve as an important resource for academic work in such fields as international law and international relations.

Multicultural Assessment

Multicultural Assessment PDF Author: Richard H. Dana
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135606986
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
Psychologists throughout the world are being asked to assess an increasingly diverse clientele: immigrants, refugees, second and third generations still influenced by different cultures and languages, and indigenous peoples now moving towards the mainstream. Most are ill-equipped by training and experience to understand, assess, and subsequently treat such clients competently and ethically. Virtually all agree on the need for culture-sensitive assessment, but it has proven difficult to provide adequate services, despite good intentions and funding. Too often, clients who may have different worldview and health-illness beliefs are marginalized. For many reasons, standard assessment instruments designed, researched, and normed on a few groups in the United States--the MMPI-2, the Rorschach, and the TAT--are used as though they were universally applicable. Most busy practitioners have little time to investigate alternatives developed for use with one new group or another, focused on one issue or another, generally in a research context. In this book, Richard Dana proposes a new model of multicultural assessment practice and points directions for future training and research. He presents general, culture-specific, and step-by-step instrument-specific guidelines for the use of the standard armamentarium with different groups. Throughout, he highlights exciting new interpretive possibilities the traditional tests offer that should be regularly exploited, but emphasizes the importance of recognizing psychometric limits. Four extended examples of the use of one or several instruments with a specific group offer concrete illustrations of the model in action. Multicultural Assessment: Principles, Applications, and Examples constitutes an invaluable new resource for psychologists and for their students and trainees.

Diversity and Inclusion on Campus

Diversity and Inclusion on Campus PDF Author: Rachelle Winkle-Wagner
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136576185
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
As scholars and practitioners in higher education attempt to embrace and lead diversity efforts, it is imperative that they have an understanding of the issues that affect historically underrepresented students. Using an intersectional approach that connects the categories of race, class, and gender, Diversity and Inclusion on Campus comprehensively covers the range of college experiences, from gaining access to higher education to successfully persisting through degree programs. Authors Winkle-Wagner and Locks bridge research, theory, and practice related to the ways that peers, faculty, administrators, and institutions can and do influence racially and ethnically underrepresented students’ experiences. This book is an invaluable resource for future and current higher education and student affairs practitioners working toward full inclusion and participation for all students in higher education. Special features: Chapter Case Studies—cases written by on-the-ground practitioners help readers make meaningful connections between theory, research, and practice. Coverage of Theory and Research—each chapter provides a systematic treatment of the literature and research related to underrepresented students’ experiences of getting into college, getting through college, and getting out of college. Discussion Questions—questions encourage practitioners and researchers to explore concepts in more depth, consider best practices, and make connections to their own contexts.
