Book Description
The purpose of the work documented in this report was to develop a capability to evaluate collision avoidance systems (CAS) and to perform an operational analysis on a time-frequency collision avoidance system using this capability. Answers were sought for the following questions: (1) Given a certain threat geometry, how effective is the CAS in providing safe separation of the aircraft. (2) How do measurement errors degrade the performance of the CAS for a given encounter. (3) To what extent do alarms propagate vertically in high traffic density environments such as holding patterns. (Author).

Book Description
A Time/Frequency Collision Avoidance System (T/F CAS) test program was conducted to provide a detailed representation of the capability and limitations of the T/F CAS concept. The results of this program, together with results of tests of other CAS concepts, will be required for and utilized in the selection of any national CAS standard. The test program involved flight and laboratory testing, and analysis of the resultant test data. Details of these efforts and the overall results and conclusions of the T/F CAS test program are presented. Both commercial-air-carrier (FULL CAS) and general-aviation (MICRO CAS) equipments were evaluated. The equipments were found to measure range, range rate (FULL CAS only), and altitude separation with sufficient accuracy to provide warnings and alarms to aircraft at suitable times. Features of the T/F CAS concept that are essential to its operation, such as communications reliability, synchronization, susceptibility of interference, and resolution of time-slot co-occupancy, were evaluated and found to be acceptable for T/F CAS operation. The tests of normal en-route and terminal situations were supplemented by special test flights to demonstrate the performance of the T/F CAS equipments in infrequently occurring situations such as supersonic encounters, encounters by T/F CAS-equipped aircraft operating in back-up mode, and three-aircraft encounters.
