Book Description
Excerpt from Opera Drama, Vol. 1 of 2 It has long been recognised in Germany that the best way to render the effect of Wagner's life-work permanent is to secure a sufficient attention to his prose writings; and not only an attention sufficient in amount, but of the right kind. There have hitherto been two customs prevailing with regard to these works; each, no doubt, natural and excusable, but neither of them much calculated to further the master's interest from the higher standpoint. One of these has consisted of making use of books merely for reference - say for the purpose of settling disputes with regard to the composer, of quoting his aphorisms, or of drawing instruction as to points of detail falling within the range of his specialities. The other has been merely an indulgence of curiosity in following Wagner's treatment of social questions; a certain polemical interest in the latter having been aroused both by his boldness in harnessing them to the musical subject, and by the energetic or even somewhat provocative choice of terms employed. The Victor Book of the Opera

The Victor Book of the Opera PDF Author: Victor Talking Machine Company
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330630778
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 440

Book Description
Excerpt from The Victor Book of the Opera: Stories of One-Hundred Operas With Five-Hundred Illustrations Descriptions of One-Thousand Victor Opera Records The opera has at last come into its own in the United States. In former years merely the pastime of the well-to-do in New York City and vicinity, grand opera is now enjoyed for its own sake by millions of hearers throughout the country. Boston. Chicago. Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Montreal now have their regular opera season; while many other cities have arranged for occasional performances. The Victor Responsible for Much of this Awakened Interest During the recent season several hundred performances of grand opera, at an estimated cost of millions of dollars, were given in the United States. This great outlay for dramatic music alone would not have been possible had it not been for the increased interest aroused in opera by the widespread distribution by the Victor during the past ten years of hundreds of thousands of grand opera records, at widely varying prices - from the double-faced records by well-known Italian and French artists of Europe, at 371/2 cents per selection, to the great concerted numbers by famous singers at $6.00 and $7.00. The Opera-Goer and the Victor Even though fortunate enough to be able to attend the opera, the lover of operatic music is reminded that with the Victor and the operatic records his enjoyment of the opera may be greatly increased. The favorite singers may be beard at home as often as desired, and their voices will he just as natural as in life. Do you think Caruso the greatest of tenors? Then do not be satisfied with an occasional hearing of his glorious voice at the opera, but let him sing for you and your friends by means of the Victor. Is Sembrich, Farrar, Tetrazzini. Gadski, Calve, Schumann-Heink, Homer or Amato your favorite singer? The Victor makes it possible to hear these voices at any time, no matter where the artists may be singing. Voices of Absent Singers Do you regret that Melba is often in Australia or Europe? There is consolation in the thought that her voice is always here in all its loveliness, indelibly impressed on Victor discs. Have you memories of Tamagno when he was at his best? The Victor will revive these memories for you by bringing the voice of this singer back from the grave. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rich and Poor

Rich and Poor PDF Author: Matthew Gregory Lewis

Pages : 80

Book Description
Excerpt from Rich and Poor: A Comic Opera Strong objections, we remember, were urged against the tendency of the Opera; and, questionless, the criminal intercourse of a female with the husband of another does seem to be regarded in a very leni ent point of view, but as it luckily comes not within our province to examine closely into these detailed points of morality, we shall wave all discussion of the question here. The author's opinions upon the subject of female frailty. Appear to have increased in laxity as be ad vanced in years, for the play originally terminated with the following great moral lesson, which in the altered piece is omitted: this, however, might arise from an impression that it was of too serious a character for the close of a Comic Opera, and calculated to cast an unpleasant damp upon the feelings of an audience.
