Category : Fiction

Pages : 447

Book Description
An epic space opera from Michael T. Kuester Once, humans were masters of their galaxy. Then they met the Others. They never communicated, or even showed their faces. They seemed driven by a single goal: the complete extinction of humanity. Amid their genocidal campaign, the survivors in the Sol system constructed the Lock: a Dyson sphere surrounding the inner planets, hiding them from the Others. Millennia later, what remains of humanity languishes within the Lock, oppressed by the shadowy Protectorate, which banned extrasolar travel. Now, their security forces work to uphold laws no one cares enough to break. Braylen Roads is content to serve as a ship captain, until a chance encounter with the enigmatic Declan March leads him to break the most inviolate law of the Protectorate: do not travel beyond the Lock. Banished with March for his crime, Braylen finds himself in command of an ancient and wondrous starship. With an unlikely crew including a tenacious reporter and a quasi-human child wise beyond her years, he must seek out survivors of the Others' purge, unravel the mysteries of the Protectorate, and restore humanity to its rightful place among the stars.

Book Description
On the verge of extinction, only the gravest imaginable crime against humanity can save it...A bold new plan seeks to ignite a new Sunspot over Greenhouse, saving the habitat domes crucial to the survival of the Solacian people. The only answer lies in the hands of the founder of the planet Solace: Oskar DeSilvo, seemingly returned from the dead to save the worlds his frauds had doomed to destruction. But as the work begins, agents of the Chronologic Patrol step in to prevent interference with the past—even at the risk of dooming humanity. Thwarted at every turn, DeSilvo and his onetime nemesis, Anton Koffield, propose one last wildly grandiose idea—one final, desperate gamble. But if the only choice lies between madness and certain catastrophe—is there any choice at all? From the Paperback edition.

Conrad’s European Context

Conrad’s European Context PDF Author: Andrzej Busza
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004690921
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
On account of Conrad’s tragic and fascinating life before he became a writer, critics have usually offered a historical account of his early Polish years. Less attention has been paid to the cultural and literary background of that period and its subsequent influence. In fact, initially that influence was largely ignored. My aim has been not only to rectify that deficiency but to broaden the scope of the issue. In addition to dealing with his Polish background, the book also relates Conrad’s writing to other European literary traditions, notably French and Russian. Exploring the extraordinary geographical and historical range of Conrad’s fictional world, the book examines the rhetorical and narrative strategies employed in its vividly dramatic as well as psychologically insightful depictions.
