World Wide Waste: How Digital Is Killing Our Planet—and What We Can Do About It

World Wide Waste: How Digital Is Killing Our Planet—and What We Can Do About It PDF Author: Gerry McGovern
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1916444628
Category : Electronic waste
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
Speaking out when it's unpopular. Back in the day, Henry David Thoreau raged at the robber barons-the big shots of their age, despoiling the environment in the name of progress. Deep in the throes of the seemingly unstoppable growth of tech, a modern-day Thoreau has emerged in the guise of Gerry McGovern-decrying the massive, hidden negative impacts of tech on the environment. McGovern has thoroughly documented in World Wide Waste how tech damages the Earth-and what we should be doing about it. It is not just the acres of discarded computer hardware conveniently dumped in Third World countries. Every time an email is downloaded it contributes to global warming. Every tweet, search, check of a webpage creates pollution. Digital is physical. Those data centers are not in the Cloud. They're on land in massive physical buildings packed full of computers hungry for energy. It seems invisible. It seems cheap and free. It's not. Digital costs the Earth.

The Survey of Best Practices in Developing Online Information Literacy Tutorials 06/2013

The Survey of Best Practices in Developing Online Information Literacy Tutorials 06/2013 PDF Author: Primary Research Group
Publisher: Primary Research Group Inc
ISBN: 1574402471
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
The Survey of Best Practices in Developing Online Information Literacy Tutorials is a benchmarking report for online tutorial development, presenting a wealth of information on the practices involved in and the cost of developing online information literacy tutorials. The 285-page report also looks at how tutorials are marketed and accessed, and at popular access points such as Facebook, the library website and others, as well as how tutorials are used in for-credit classes and more ad-hoc use. The study looks at how tutorial designers are trained, and at how they inter-relate to non-library departments and other departments of the library. The study also looks at the use of tutorials of other colleges and vendor-produced tutorials, and at efforts to evaluate how students use tutorials, and how colleges should make decisions on what kinds of tutorials to produce and how to best produce them. The questionnaire for the report was largely developed by librarians at the University of Arizona libraries.

Finding Reliable Information Online

Finding Reliable Information Online PDF Author: Leslie F. Stebbins
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442253940
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
We live in an information-saturated environment and spend far too much time searching, surfing, skimming, contributing, and organizing the information in our lives. We spend too little time immersing ourselves in reliable high quality information. We are often so buried in information and strapped for time that we grab information like it was fast food, without bothering to evaluate its quality. Finding Reliable Information Online: Adventures of an Information Sleuth uses stories or “information adventures” to illustrate the best approaches to searching for information and to help us develop our aptitude for locating high quality resources in a rapidly changing digital environment that is becoming proficient at monopolizing our attention with useless or unreliable information. This book is about taking charge of the search process and not handing over the reins to search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo to dictate what information we consume. Each chapter focuses on a quest for different types of information while digging deeper into the complexities of finding credible places to look for information and ways to think about evaluating it. As the Internet evolves and becomes more sophisticated, our strategies for finding and evaluating information need to evolve as well. The stories in this book range from investigating challenging research questions to exploring health issues and everyday life questions like finding a reliable restaurant or product review. These chapters go beyond the simple and more mechanical checklist approach to evaluating information, though these factors are also discussed.

Private Power, Online Information Flows and EU Law

Private Power, Online Information Flows and EU Law PDF Author: Angela Daly
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1509900640
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
This monograph examines how European Union law and regulation address concentrations of private economic power which impede free information flows on the Internet to the detriment of Internet users' autonomy. In particular, competition law, sector specific regulation (if it exists), data protection and human rights law are considered and assessed to the extent they can tackle such concentrations of power for the benefit of users. Using a series of illustrative case studies, of Internet provision, search, mobile devices and app stores, and the cloud, the work demonstrates the gaps that currently exist in EU law and regulation. It is argued that these gaps exist due, in part, to current overarching trends guiding the regulation of economic power, namely neoliberalism, by which only the situation of market failure can invite ex ante rules, buoyed by the lobbying of regulators and legislators by those in possession of such economic power to achieve outcomes which favour their businesses. Given this systemic, and extra-legal, nature of the reasons as to why the gaps exist, solutions from outside the system are proposed at the end of each case study. This study will appeal to EU competition lawyers and media lawyers.
