Book Description
Excerpt from One Thousand Books for Children The object of this book is to provide not only a practical list of suggestions that may be of service to those desirous of securing good and wholesome literature for their children, but also one that may be used by the children themselves. This compilation is divided into nineteen groups, in which the books are graded according to ages, so that selection may be readily made, and each hook title is followed by a short descriptive note. It is impossible to draw any absolute line as to the particular age a boy or girl must be in order to read and assimilate the contents of a certain book, such is the difference in mental development. However, long experience has shown the compiler what is best adapted to the average, and the grading has been done accordingly. Much care has been used in selecting books which have some value in assisting the gradual evolution of the mind or in shaping character, and which, at the same time, will make their appeal to the boy or girl. Way back in the tenth century, he and his mother were given the alchemical secret to eternal life. But when everything Alfie knows is destroyed in a fire, and the modern world intrudes, he must embark on a mission--along with friends Aidan and Roxy--to find a way to reverse the process and grow up like a regular boy. This astonishing new novel from the author of Time Traveling with a Hamster, told in alternating perspectives by Alfie and Aidan, is a tour de force--a sweeping epic that takes you on an unforgettable, breathtaking adventure and asks big questions about the meaning of life.

One Thousand Poems for Children

One Thousand Poems for Children PDF Author: Roger Ingpen

Category : History

Pages : 456

Book Description
Excerpt from One Thousand Poems for Children: A New Choice of the Best Verse Old New As perhaps nothing leaves a more lasting impression on the memory than the poems one learns in childhood, it is important that children should be provided with poetry that is both pleasant to read and profitable to remember, and it is to meet these two needs that the present volume has been prepared. In compiling the work, the two objects which have primarily been kept in mind are the claim of poetry and the demand of the children; but, since the collection is intended chiefly for the pleasure of our boys and girls, the demand of the children has been considered first. For this reason, most of the old favorites which, because of their very familiarity, deserve a place in all collections of children's verse, have been selected, together with a generous quantity of nursery rhymes; but it has been deemed wise also to include the most desirable specimens of recent juvenile poetry. The form of verse that first appeals to the young is that of a mere pleasing repetition of sound and rhythm without regard to meaning; but this soon gives way to the little story, quite simple and simply told, it is true, but which nevertheless conveys an idea. The story continues to hold its place in the affection of the child until the period of youth is reached, when abstract subjects in poetry begin to offer attraction, and a child cannot be said really to care for poetry in the true sense until this time arrives.
