Book Description
Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Land Values in Chicago: The Relationship of the Growth of Chicago to the Rise in Its Land Values, 1830-1933 In the annals of the past, many whose names are unknown to me have furnished invaluable material. The real estate editors of the Chicago Tribune, who weekly wrote searching comments upon real estate transactions in the Sunday papers Since 1870, the editors of the Economist, the editors of the Real Estate and Building Journal have written many lines which reappear in these pages. Mr. Frank Chandler wrote much on early land-value history, and gave me access to his private files before his death. Mr. Everett Chamberlin, in his book, Chicago and Its Suburbs and Mr. Mark L. Putney, in his Land Values and Historical Notes of Chicago (1890, furnished great assistance. The work of Captain A. T. Andreas on the History of Chicago (1886) proved very useful. White on Arrival

White on Arrival PDF Author: Thomas A. Guglielmo
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198035381
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
Taking the mass Italian immigration of the late 19th century as his starting point and drawing on dozens of oral histories and a diverse array of primary sources in English and Italian, Guglielmo focuses on how perceptions of Italians' race and color were shaped in one of America's great centers of immigration and labor, Chicago. His account skillfully weaves together the major events of Chicago immigrant history--the "Chicago Color Riot" of 1919, the rise of Italian organized crime, and the rise of industrial unionism--with national and international events--such as the rise of fascism and the Italian-Ethiopian War of 1935-36--to present the story of how Italians approached, learned, and lived race. By tracking their evolving position in the city's racial hierarchy, Guglielmo reveals the impact of racial classification--both formal and informal--on immigrants' abilities to acquire homes and jobs, start families, and gain opportunities in America. White on Arrival was the winner of the 2004 Frederick Jackson Turner Award of the Organization of American Historians

Chicago's Historic Hyde Park

Chicago's Historic Hyde Park PDF Author: Susan O'Connor Davis
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226925196
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 503

Book Description
Stretching south from 47th Street to the Midway Plaisance and east from Washington Park to the lake’s shore, the historic neighborhood of Hyde Park—Kenwood covers nearly two square miles of Chicago’s south side. At one time a wealthy township outside of the city, this neighborhood has been home to Chicago’s elite for more than one hundred and fifty years, counting among its residents presidents and politicians, scholars, athletes, and fiery religious leaders. Known today for the grand mansions, stately row houses, and elegant apartments that these notables called home, Hyde Park—Kenwood is still one of Chicago’s most prominent locales. Physically shaped by the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and by the efforts of some of the greatest architects of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—including Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe—this area hosts some of the city’s most spectacular architecture amid lush green space. Tree-lined streets give way to the impressive neogothic buildings that mark the campus of the University of Chicago, and some of the Jazz Age’s swankiest high-rises offer spectacular views of the water and distant downtown skyline. In Chicago’s Historic Hyde Park, Susan O’Connor Davis offers readers a biography of this distinguished neighborhood, from house to home, and from architect to resident. Along the way, she weaves a fascinating tapestry, describing Hyde Park—Kenwood’s most celebrated structures from the time of Lincoln through the racial upheaval and destructive urban renewal of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s into the preservationist movement of the last thirty-five years. Coupled with hundreds of historical photographs, drawings, and current views, Davis recounts the life stories of these gorgeous buildings—and of the astounding talents that built them. This is architectural history at its best.
