Book Description
Excerpt from One Hundred Best American Poems This grouping of American poems had its rise in the welcome accorded to a little volume entitled "The Hundred Best English Poems," issued by the same publishers. To select one hundred examples from the best work by our American poets, excluding all living authors, and avoiding an undue proportion of pieces by the few acknowledged to be preeminent, has been a puzzling although a pleasant task. Of course, no two editors would select the same hundred pieces from the sixty-four poets here represented. Any one familiar with our poetical literature will miss here certain favorites, and perhaps would criticize some of the selections. This is inevitable. It is not always the most finished art which expresses feelings and "thoughts that shall live within the general mind." Book Description
Excerpt from Poetry of America: Selections From One Hundred American Poets From 1776 to 1876 The earliest project for a collection of Specimens of American poetry was that of James Rivington, a royalist printer of New York, who in 1773 sent out a circular to all reputed poets, requesting to be favoured with copies of their productions. The war for independence prevented the carrying out of this design; and no new attempt was made, except a small selection by Matthew Carey from nineteen writers, until 1793, when Richard Alsop printed at Litchfield, Connecticut, the first and only volume of a proposed series of American Poems, selected and original. In 1794 appeared an insignificant selection, entitled the Columbian Muse. Not till 1829 was there anything worth calling a collection. The Open Door

The Open Door PDF Author: Don Share

Pages : 225

Book Description
“If readers would like to sample the genius and diversity of American poetry in the last century, there’s no better place to start.” —World Literature Today When Harriet Monroe founded Poetry magazine in Chicago in 1912, she began with an image: the Open Door. For a century, the most important and enduring poets have walked through that door—William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens in its first years, Rae Armantrout and Kay Ryan in 2011. And at the same time, Poetry continues to discover the new voices who will be read a century from now. To celebrate the magazine’s centennial, the editors combed through Poetry’s incomparable archives to create a new kind of anthology. With the self-imposed limitation to one hundred, they have assembled a collection of poems that, in their juxtaposition, echo across a century of poetry. Here, Adrienne Rich appears alongside Charles Bukowski; famous poems of the two world wars flank a devastating yet lesser-known poem of the Vietnam War; Short extracts from Poetry’s letters and criticism punctuate the verse selections, hinting at themes and threads and serving as guides, interlocutors, or dissenting voices. The resulting volume is a celebration of idiosyncrasy and invention, a vital monument to an institution that refuses to be static, and, most of all, a book that lovers of poetry will devour, debate, and keep close at hand.
