Bearers of Risk

Bearers of Risk PDF Author: Neta Gordon
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0228012244
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
The short story and the short story cycle have long been considered a marginal genre, free to make room for fresh or risk-taking voices. But in thematizing masculinity in crisis, the genre uses the premise of the marginal to elevate recuperative masculinity politics and nostalgia for traditional patriarchy. Despite the scholarly tendency to link marginal genres and marginalized voices, features of the CanLit infrastructure – including genre criticism and literary prize culture – are complicit in normalizing hegemonic masculinity and the Settler colonial project. Bearers of Risk examines how male Canadian writers mobilize the early twenty-first-century short story cycle as an illustration of post-9/11 recuperative masculinity politics, exposing the tendency to position White, heteronormative men’s viewpoints as objective. Neta Gordon introduces the civil bearer of risk, a figure who comprehends the position of men as being marked by or for failure, and who reasserts masculine authority as civil duty towards community. This book looks at contemporary experimental short story cycles, debut cycles by ethnically minoritized and immigrant writers, and cycles unified by setting, whether suburban, urban, or rural. Bearers of Risk unsettles popular notions of the inherent outsider status of the short story cycle while also scrutinizing expressions of recuperative masculinity politics through which men assert their right to reclaim the centre.

Confronting his own mortality, the tough and taciturn Cecil West has a dying request for his grandson: track down the father Alan has never known so that the old man can make peace with him. And so Alan begins his search for the elusive Jack West, a man who skipped town before his son could walk and of whom his grandfather has always refused to speak. His quest will lead him to Archer, an old American soldier who decades ago went AWOL across the border into Canada. In Bare Knuckle People Management authors Sean O'Neil and John Kulisek cut through the crap to show managers how to push their teams to success, not by following fluffy leadership training but by using the skills that got them promoted in the first place. Forget kumbayas or one-minute managing. The best people managers know that approaches that work great with one employee will be lost on the next. With the same irreverent and straightforward style they use in their management training workshops, O'Neil and Kulisek describe the 16 basic worker types you must learn to recognize, from The Badass to The Burnout, and how to customize your leadership style for each type. The authors encourage the readers to take pieces of what works from each of the sections and they also remind them to follow the gut instinct that got them to their new management position in the first place. Written in short, easily digestible sections, and both entertaining and insightful throughout, Bare Knuckle People Management is perfect for any manager pressed for time and in need of some straightforward advice.
