Book Description
Tensile and shear stress concentrations have been found in prior work to degrade the performance of tension test specimen designs in current use. In the particular case of tabbed specimens there is need for an alternative specimen design to avoid problems with tab failures and loss of tabs when testing in adverse environments. The streamline shape which is described here provides such an alternative. This paper discusses the theoretical background to the streamline shape, together with results of studies in which its performance is compared experimentally with other specimen types, especially tabbed specimens, in both static and fatigue testing environments.

Studies of Tension Test Specimens for Composite Material Testing

Studies of Tension Test Specimens for Composite Material Testing PDF Author: Donald W. Oplinger

Book Description
This report covers stress analysis and experimental studies of four types of tension specimens designed for testing composite materials. Two ASTM specimen types (D3039 tab-ended and D638 dogbone) are considered, along with the bowtie (flat bar with linear taper) design developed by Grumman and a streamline design developed at AMMRC. Stress analyses of the first three types show them to be subjected to high shear stresses and tensile stress concentrations which tend to degrade their performance. Experimental studies generally tended to confirm that failures initiated where the stress peaks were predicted, and suggest that elimination of such peaks would lead to a better-performing tension specimen. Stress analysis of the AMMRC streamline design showed how shear stress levels and indicated that the design is free of tensile stress concentrations. Results of efforts aimed at experimental evaluation of the streamline specimen indicate that it has much promise as an improved design for tension testing, both under monotonic and cyclic loading. Engineered Materials Handbook, Desk Edition

Engineered Materials Handbook, Desk Edition PDF Author: ASM International. Handbook Committee
Publisher: ASM International
ISBN: 0871702835
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1313

Book Description
A comprehensive reference on the properties, selection, processing, and applications of the most widely used nonmetallic engineering materials. Section 1, General Information and Data, contains information applicable both to polymers and to ceramics and glasses. It includes an illustrated glossary, a collection of engineering tables and data, and a guide to materials selection. Sections 2 through 7 focus on polymeric materials--plastics, elastomers, polymer-matrix composites, adhesives, and sealants--with the information largely updated and expanded from the first three volumes of the Engineered Materials Handbook. Ceramics and glasses are covered in Sections 8 through 12, also with updated and expanded information. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Stress Concentrations in Laminated Composites

Stress Concentrations in Laminated Composites PDF Author: Seng C. Tan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351413368
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 483

Book Description
From the Author's PrefaceThe objective of this book is to provide a thorough and systematic study of the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations. Stress concentrations are introduced in laminated plates in the forms of circular holes, elliptical openings and straight cracks. These forms of cutouts have many practical applications, and are familiar to most engineers. Stress concentrations exist in all known structural components. Stress concentrations have great practical importance because they are normally the cause of failure. In addition to stress analyses of laminated composites, we need more fundamental understanding of the failure mode, the failure criterion, the effects on global laminate response, and the design of composites in the presence of stress concentrations. In this book, all the subjects studied are closely related to the problem of stress concentrations in laminated composites . . . . All the models are verified with many experimental results. The underlying objective of this comprehensive study is to give the readers an in-depth and thorough understanding of the problem of stress concentrations in composites. This book is the first to address the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations in a systematic way.
