Book Description
This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Geology of Millard County, Utah

Geology of Millard County, Utah PDF Author: Lehi F. Hintze
Publisher: Utah Geological Survey
ISBN: 1557916926
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
This bulletin serves not only to introduce the non-geologist to the rich geology of Millard County, but also to provide professional geologists with technical information on the stratigraphy, paleontology, and structural geology of the county. Millard County is unique among Utah’s counties in that it contains an exceptionally complete billion-year geologic record. This happened because until about 200 million years ago the area of present-day Millard County lay near sea level and was awash in shallow marine waters on a continental shelf upon which a stack of fossil-bearing strata more than 6 miles (10 km) thick slowly accumulated. This bulletin summarizes what is known about these strata, as well as younger rocks and surficial deposits in the county, and provides references to scientific papers that describe them in greater detail. Mountains North 30 x 60 (1:100,000-scale) quadrangles. These companion maps and this bulletin portray the geology of Millard County more completely and accurately than any previously published work.

Introduction to the Study of Paleobotany - Palaeontological Botany

Introduction to the Study of Paleobotany - Palaeontological Botany PDF Author: John Hutton Balfour
Publisher: anboco
ISBN: 3736406371
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
The subject of Fossil Botany or Palæophytology has formed a part of the Course of Botany in the University of Edinburgh for the last twenty-five years, and the amount of time devoted to the exposition of it has increased. The recent foundation of a Chair of Geology and of a Falconer Palæontological Fellowship in the University seems to require from the Professors of Zoology and Botany special attention to the bearings of their departments of science on the structure of the animals and plants of former epochs of the Earth's history. No one can be competent to give a correct decision in regard to Fossils, unless he has studied thoroughly the present Fauna and Flora of the globe. To give a well-founded opinion in regard to extinct beings, it is essential that the observer should be conversant with the conformation and development of the living ones now on the earth; with their habits, modes of existence and reproduction, the microscopic structure of their tissues, their distribution, and their relation to soil, the atmosphere, temperature, and climate...

Book Description
The Forrest Kerr-Mess Creek map area straddles the intermontane & coast belt boundary in north-west British Columbia. This report presents results of geological investigations undertaken to produce detailed maps & a database to better understand the geological setting of the area's mineral deposits and to aid in making new mineral discoveries. The introduction includes information on previous geological work in the area and on the regional geology. Chapter 2 describes the stratigraphy of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and later formations. Chapter 3 covers the area's intrusive rocks, including plutonic suites, dikes, and other intrusions. Chapter 4 discusses geologic structure, including deformational history and faults. The final chapter examines the area's economic geology and includes descriptions of mineral occurrences of four types: porphyry, skarn, sub-volcanic vein, and stratiform.
