Book Description
Excerpt from On the Effect of Time and Temperature on the Strength of Steel and Iron The behaviour of iron and steel under simple stresses of various kinds has long been a subject of investigation by the Engineer. And very complete data are available for use in designing structures in metal. When iron or steel is subjected to tensional stress sufficient to cause a permanent stretch in the material, it is well known that the ductility of the material is reduced, and that ultimately the elastic limit rises. Book Description
The most comprehensive collection of time-temperature diagrams for irons and steels ever collected. Between this volume and its companion, Atlas of Time Temperature Diagrams for Nonferrous Alloys, you'll find the most comprehensive collection of time-temperature diagrams ever collected. Containing both commonly used curves and out-of-print and difficult-to-find data, these Atlases represent an outstanding worldwide effort, with contributions from experts in 14 countries. Time-temperature diagrams show how metals respond to heating and cooling, allowing you to predict the behavior and know beforehand the sequence of heating and cooling steps to develop the desired properties. These collections are a valuable resource for any materials engineer Both Collections Include: Easy-to-Read Diagrams Isothermal transformation Continuous cooling transformation Time-temperature precipitation Time-temperature embrittlement Time-temperature ordering Materials Included in the Irons and Steels Volume: Low-carbon High Strength Low Alloy Stainless (Maraging, austenitic, ferritic, duplex) Chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, silicon Structural Quenched and tempered Spring and Rail High-temperature creep-resistant Tool and die Eutectoid, hypereutectoid carbon Deep hardening Titanium bearing Irons: Gray cast, malleable, white, white cast, ductile.

Book Description
During the past 20 years, the field of mechanical engineering has undergone enormous changes. These changes have been driven by many factors, including: the development of computer technology worldwide competition in industry improvements in the flow of information satellite communication real time monitoring increased energy efficiency robotics automatic control increased sensitivity to environmental impacts of human activities advances in design and manufacturing methods These developments have put more stress on mechanical engineering education, making it increasingly difficult to cover all the topics that a professional engineer will need in his or her career. As a result of these developments, there has been a growing need for a handbook that can serve the professional community by providing relevant background and current information in the field of mechanical engineering. The CRC Handbook of Mechanical Engineering serves the needs of the professional engineer as a resource of information into the next century.

Effect of Temperature, Deformation, and Rate of Loading on the Tensile Properties of Low-Carbon Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range (Classic Reprint)

Effect of Temperature, Deformation, and Rate of Loading on the Tensile Properties of Low-Carbon Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Herbert James French

Book Description
Excerpt from Effect of Temperature, Deformation, and Rate of Loading on the Tensile Properties of Low-Carbon Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range It has long been known that increase in temperature above the ordinary atmospheric range is accompanied by changes in steels, particularly in strength and ductility. A large number of interesting and important papers dealing with various phases of this subject have appeared from time to time, but as recently pointed out by Jeffries our knowledge 15 still unsatisfactory, and a better understanding of these changes will undoubtedly be of benefit to industry. White (35) is of the opinion that our knowledge of the tensilgyproperties of steels at high temperatures is wholly inadequate: and has not kept pace with advancement of knowledge in other branches of engineering, while Howe (3 8) long 0 ago called attention to the apparent anomalies found in study ing the effects of work at temperatures under the thermal trans formations on the properties of wrought iron and steel used in boiler construction. Certainly, from the standpoint of engineering design, it is important to know the variations in limit of propor tionality with changes in temperature, but unfortunately this is the more difficult to determine of those factors considered in tensile tests, and the data available are conflicting.
