Book Description
Excerpt from On the Amelioration of Slavery In this speaking of the insurrection at Barbadoes, I have argued as if the statements of the advocates of slavery respecting the causes of it were correct, that is, that the rising proceeded from the evitation of the question of the Registry Bi'll. But it, is far from being proved that this quesnon had more than a partial bearing upon the cause of the commotion. The insar rection was far from being general, and appears to have only taken place on a few estates. What may be the result of farther evidence it would be premature to say. In the mean time the accounts already received contain nothing which renders it necessary to assume that the whole mischief did not originate in a revolt of Mr. Scott's negroes against their immediate masters or managers, excited by some local and peculiar cause; and which in its progress may possibly have been aggravated by the impressions the negroes may have received from the intemperate representations of their masters respecting the tendency of the Registry Bill. Remarks on the in 3urrection in Barbadoes, &c. P. 7. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lectures on Slavery (Classic Reprint)

Lectures on Slavery (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Benjamin Godwin

Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Slavery When the following Lectures were delivered, the Author had not the remotest idea of publication; but as he has ventured to come before the Public, he begs to say a few words in explanation of his reasons and his object. From his earliest years he felt a hatred to oppression: his love of liberty, civil and religious, "grew with his growth and strengthened with his strength." He no sooner heard of slavery in the British dominions, and the miseries necessarily attendant on such a state, than he deeply deplored the case of the injured Negro. He was too young to take any part in the great struggle for the abolition of the slave trade, though he sincerely rejoiced in that great triumph of humanity. Since 1823, however, he has taken a more lively interest in the subject; and towards the close of the last year, by means of the information which was laid before the public from time to time, his mind became so strongly impressed with the subject, that it followed him night and day: he felt that, for the peace of his own mind, he must make some attempt on behalf of his suffering fellow-creatures; it became a point of conscience. The inquiry then arose, what could he do, engaged as he was as tutor in a Dissenting college, and pastor of a church and congregation? American Slavery

American Slavery PDF Author: Jonathan Ward

Book Description
Excerpt from American Slavery: And the Means of Its Abolition More than forty years ago the writer of the following pages read Wilberforce's publications on the slave trade, in which were described the various methods of procuring the slaves in Africa, the horrors of the "middle passage," and their cruel treatment in the West Indies. In perusing these statements of that great philanthropist and friend of the injured African race, his feelings became, in some measure, enlisted in favor of the colored people of our land, and in opposition to the slavery upheld by our nation. He was never sensible of feeling the prejudice against color, so often manifested; but, in his intercourse with colored persons, treated them, as he would others. And having them for many years as neighbors, and, not unfrequently, as hired help, they were admitted to eat with the family at the same table. In 1824 he was invited to attend a political celebration on the 4th of July. In declining the invitation, he noticed the inconsistency of our conduct in celebrating our liberty, founded upon the principle that all men are created free and equal, and proclaiming this "self-evident truth," and yet holding hundreds of thousands of our fellow men in degrading bondage. The next year, he was requested to preach on the 4th of July. The sermon was, by request, printed. The following extract will show the writer's views respecting American slavery. "Our conduct in relation to the Africans has been most inconsistent, absurd, and criminal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Slavery and the War The reconstruction Of the Union on the basis of slavery is the real aim of the chiefs of the Southern Rebellion, which reconstruction would give them a government similar in its essential features to that of an cient pagan Rome, and a government, if the States held. Together, prepared for future conquest. Ethe Union reconstructed, it could pro ceed to the conquest of Mexico and Central America, and reduce their negro and colored populations to slavery, which would be counted their Americanization. This done, it could proceed, beginning with Cuba, to the annexation, one after another, of the West India Islands. It then could extend its power Over the whole continent of South America, and threaten an advance upon Eastern Asia, and the annexation of all the cotton-producing countries and tropical regions Of the globe, and through the monopoly of cotton, rice, and tropical productions in general, to Obtain the control of the commerce and credit of all nations. Such, to a greater or less extent, is the dream which Southern statesmen have indulged, and which they have taken the first step toward realizing. In its full extent no sane man supposes the dream practicable; but its practicability, up to a certain point, has been demonstrated by the suc cess which has hitherto attended the Rebellion, for, up to the present, successful it undeniably has been. The Confederates have brought into the field a more effective, if not a larger force, than the Federal govern ment has thus far brought against them and, from the Potomac to the Mississippi, they hold the strategic lines, and can be met by the Federal forces only at great disadvantage. As yet not one of those lines has been wrested from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Remarks on Slavery and Emancipation Ejects of Slavery. I shall now Slightly speak of some Of the effects of slavery, which, though apparently indi rect, are necessary. We have seen how carefully all mental improvement was guarded against in the slave; and also how Slight was the protection of his person. His morals are not better cared for. Honesty is, to be sure, cherished, 01 may be presumed to be; although where temptation is all around, and the sanctions Of any virtue are so slight, this one cannot be secure. Another, quite as important to the character, though not to the master's interest, has less protection; that is chastity. It is perhaps idle to Speak Of what there is so little pretence of regarding. The domestic relations of the slave have no protection whatever in the law, and in practice, it' is nearly the same thing. The ceremony of marriage is sometimes performed by a clergyman or a justice, but quite as Often there is no farther preliminary to male and female living together, than simply taking each other's word, which is not thought very binding, for they divorce and marry again at pleasure. What a mockery indeed would be the marriage rites, with the solemn declaration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Abolition of Slavery: The Right of the Government Under the War Power We published, not long ago, an extract from a Speech de livered by John Quincy Adams in Congress in 1842, in which that eminent statesman confidently announced the doctrine, that in a state of war, civil or servile, in the Southern States, Congress has full and plenary power over the whole subject Of slavery; martial law takes the place of civil laws and municipal institutions, slavery among the rest, and not only the President of the United States, but the Commander of the Army, has power to order the universal emancipation of the slaves. Book Description
Excerpt from The Slavery of Poverty, With a Plan for Its Abolition One word as to the Society by which this work is published. We hold that Freedom is the birth-right not of negroes and aristocrats merely, but of all men. We hold that in order to emancipate the Slave, he must be permitted to enjoy all his natural rights; for if the Master should emancipate A part of the Slave's body and claim the rest as his property - or if he should give up the right of flogging and yet hold on to the power of starving - what would it profit the Slave We hold that in order to release the Slave from the necessity of tilling the ground for another, we must establish his right to till it for himself, and that this right 18 as sacred as his right to his body, and as essential to his Freedom. We trust that all Abolitionists will aid us in carrying out these views, and in promulgating these great principles.
