Greece

Greece PDF Author: Theodore Pelagidis
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
ISBN: 0815725779
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
Two Greek economic analysts explain the Greek financial crisis—from beginning to end. The first section of Greece: From Exit to Recovery? explores the lead up to to Greece’s adoption of the euro. Authors Theodore Pelagidis and Michael Mitsopoulos believe that the ensuing challenges were foreseeable. In fact, the authors posit that it was Greece’s difficultly in dealing with those challenges that sparked the euro crisis. Section II analyzes discrete sectors of the economy, paying special attention to labor and finance—and the mistakes creditors made in focusing on reducing Greek incomes—rather than increasing competitiveness on non-labor costs. Section III investigates why Greek companies spend relatively little on research and development.? The authors’ analysis indicates that policy decisions largely determine R&D performance in the private sector, and they advance a number of specific policy proposals to improve the situation.

Turkey's Accession to the European Union

Turkey's Accession to the European Union PDF Author: Belgin Akçay
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 0739179810
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Although Turkey has a long-held aspiration for European Union membership and has been a candidate for more than a decade, relations between the EU and Turkey have not received the attention it deserves from non-Turkish researchers thus far, and consequently the international literature on EU-Turkey relations is rather limited. In light of recent global economic and political challenges for the EU and Turkey, a need has emerged for an interdisciplinary approach to study EU-Turkey relations within the wider international political and economic context. Turkey's Accession to the European Union: Political and Economic Challenges, edited by Belgin Ak ay and Bahri Yilmaz, provides a timely overview of some of the most important issues and debates in the changing context of Europe, the change in domestic politics and foreign policy in Turkey, and the likely implications of these changes and developments for EU-Turkey relations. Within this framework, this collection includes articles emphasizing Turkey's reform process with a view to EU accession, despite EU's reservations about "absorbing" Turkey and the eventual decoupling of the Turkish reform process from European integration, as well as searching for alternative forms of cooperation or transitional arrangements which may be possible for Turkey at the time of accession.

Research, Quality, Competitiveness

Research, Quality, Competitiveness PDF Author: Attilio Stajano
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387792651
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 548

Book Description
The European Union (EU) was launched as a response to the economic dominance of the United States and – to a lesser degree – the Soviet Union. The nations of Western Europe were too small to compete against large scale and diversi?ed economies on their own. Six countries, eventually expanding to 27 (and counting), took a series of steps toward progressively deeper integration: the removal of int- nal tariffs, the construction of a common external tariff, the elimination of many (but not all) non-tariff barriers leading to a single market, and the adoption of a c- mon currency by 15 of the member states. The EU today equals and even exceeds the U. S. on many key indicators of performance. In the process, two similar but nonetheless divergent models of social and economic life stand in contrast with each other. The U. S. is more committed to capitalism and does little to dilute its harsh edges while the nations of Europe support wider social safety nets and more active regulation of commercial activity to mute the crueller aspects of the free-market. Until recently, the economic dynamism of the U. S. called into question whether the so-called European social model was sustainable in an era of globalization. The EU was slipping in competitiveness and was being challenged by new global pow- houses like China and India. Although the U. S. economy has slowed, there is little indication that European countries are capable of leveraging the situation to their advantage.

Malta and the European Union

Malta and the European Union PDF Author: Julia Neumeyer
Publisher: ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press
ISBN: 3838258142
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 116

Book Description
How do factors such as small size, insularity, vulnerability and remoteness influence a small state’s behaviour in international relations? What are the major problems and events shaping Malta-EU relations? How can Malta’s position in the EU be described? In which way can this small island state defend and enforce its own interests in such a dominant regional organisation in which all members, varying in size and power, try to protect and press ahead their specific aims? This thesis is an attempt to answer these questions and to provide a basis for further discussions and elaboration.
