Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, 1859-1865, Vol. 1 The President then delivered the Inaugural Address. He directed epecial attention to the importance of finding two facts; remarking that it had been well observed that there were even more false facts than false theories in the world. He stated that Geology was a science which rested exclbsively on a knowledge of the outer world, and none more liable to be hindered by false fade. There was none, therefore, in which the gathering up of true facts could be more needed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, 1879-1880, Vol. 6 There can be no more doubt in Lower Boulonnais than in the Weald of Kent, that the Chalk and the underlying Cretaceous formations originally extended across all the area. This vast mass of sediment, many hundreds of feet thick, has been swept away by the combined wasting power of the Tertiary seas and atmospheric agencies. The denudation of the Weald, and, consequently, of Lower Boulonnais, where the same agencies were at work, has given rise to such theorising by distinguished authors that it would be useless to add anything. I have already given, in 1876, a general account' of the views of Martin, Hopkins, Lyell, 8. Wood, godwin-austen, Prestwich, Whitaker, Ramsay, and Topley on the subject, and added some supplementary personal observations. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, 1901-1902, Vol. 17 As in the first paper of this series (kent and Sussex)! W shall confine our attention almost entirely to the zoology of th beds under consideration. The physical features of this distric have been so lucidly and graphically handled by Mr. Strahan i' the Survey Memoir that there is no need, even if we so desirec to go outside the scope of our work to repeat in detail thes observations. For zoological data the reader is referred to DI Barrois' classical work.f The results of our collecting cause us t differ from him in several important particulars, but as we followe up this difficult coast we could not but admire his broad grasp c the subject, and the general accuracy of his conclusions.
