Mobile traffic had been dramatically increasing in recent years along with the evolution toward next generation of mobile network (5G). To face this increasing demands, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Cloud Computing emerged to provide more flexibility and elasticity for mobile networks toward 5G. However, the design of these softwarization technologies for mobile network is not sufficient by itself as and the mobile services also have critical requirements in term of quality of services and user experiences that still need to be full field. Therefore, this thesis focuses on how to apply efficiently softwarization to mobile network services and associate to it flexible resource allocation. The main objective of this thesis is to propose an architecture leveraging virtualization technologies and cloud computing on legacy mobile network architecture. The proposal not only well adopts and provides flexibility as well as high availability to network infrastructure but also satisfies the quality of services requirements of future mobile services. More specifically, we first studied the use of the "cloud-native" approach and "microservices" for the creation of core network components and those of the radio access network (RAN) toward 5G. Then, in order to maintain a target level of quality of services, we dealt with the problem of the automatic scaling of microservices, via a predictive approach that we propose to avoid degradation of services. It is integrated with an autonomous orchestration platform for mobile network services. Finally, we have also proposed and implemented a multi-level scheduler, which allows both to manage the resources allocated for a virtualized mobile network, called "slice", but also and above all to manage the resources allocated to several network instances, deployed within the same physical infrastructure. All these proposals were implemented and evaluated on a realistic test bench.

Cloud networks, consisting of multiple data centers that are distributed at different geographical locations and interconnected by wide-area networks, are emerging as the next generation platform of cloud computing, due to their great potential in providing elastic, flexible, and pervasive cloud services. The operation of such a cloud network usually incurs high operational cost, e.g., electricity to power its data centers. In this thesis we study resource allocation and provisioning in a cloud network to minimize operational costs or network delays, while meeting various user Service Level Agreements (SLAs). This however poses great challenges, since the cloud network provides various resources to meet the dyanmic resource demands of various users. The distributed cloud resources further complicate the resource allocations. Existing studies considered only resource allocations in a single data center or with a single SLA, and therefore are not directly applicable to the cloud network. The development of new techniques for cost-aware resource allocation and provisioning for cloud networks is desperately needed. This thesis will tackle these key issues as follows. We firstly deal with fair dispatching of user requests to different data centers in the cloud network by taking time-varying electricity prices and workloads of data centers into consideration, such that the operational cost of the cloud network is minimized. We propose an adaptive optimization framework, and devise a fast and fair approximation algorithm with a provable approximation ratio. We secondly study the resource allocation and provisioning in a cloud network, by exploring heterogeneities of cloud resources and user demands. For this problem, we propose a two-stage optimization framework: dispatching user task requests to different data centers; followed consolidating Virtual Machines in the same data center into different servers, and we devise efficient algorithms based on the proposed framework, such that the electricity cost of the cloud network is minimized, while meeting various aspects of user SLAs. We thirdly address in the cloud network by investigating the periodic resource demands of virtual networks. We propose an efficient embedding algorithm by incorporating a novel embedding metric that accurately models dynamic workloads among data centers if resource demands of virtual networks at different periods are given in advance. Otherwise, we develop a prediction algorithm to predict the periodic resource demands. We fourthly investigate cloudlet placement in a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN), to enable pervasive cloud services for mobile users. We formulate a novel capacitated cloudlet placement problem that places K cloudlets to some strategic locations in the WMAN such that the average cloudlet access delay of mobile users is minimized. For this problem, we propose a fast yet efficient heuristic for it, and a novel approximation algorithm if cloudlets have identical processing capacities. We propose an efficient online algorithm for assigning user requests to cloudlets if the cloudlets are placed. We fifthly evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms through experimental simulations by using real and synthetic datasets. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform the existing ones significantly. We finally conclude our work and discuss potential research topics.

Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) extends the capabilities of mobile devices to improve user experience. Mobile users can offload tasks to the cloud, using abundant cloud resources to help them gather, store, and process data. In this dissertation, we consider a general three-tier multi-user MCC system consisting of mobile users, a computing access point (CAP), and a remote cloud server. The CAP serves both as the network access gateway and a computation service provider to the mobile users, so that each task may be processed locally, at the CAP, or at a remote cloud server. In a multi-user scenario, to offload tasks, we need to further allocate communication and computation resources among competing users. The existing works either optimize only the offloading decisions of tasks without the resource allocation for three-tier systems, or consider only the two-tier systems with mobile users and the remote (or nearby) processor. Instead, for a general three-tier system, we jointly consider both the offloading decision and resource allocation among all users, with an aim to conserve energy and maintain service quality for all of them. We first consider the scenario where each user has a single task, with an aim to minimize the overall cost of energy consumption, computation, and maximum delay among users. The joint optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer program, which is NP-hard in general. An efficient heuristic algorithm using semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and a new randomization mapping approach is proposed. For the case with strict delay constraints for each task, we propose a three-step algorithm to obtain a feasible solution that is locally optimal. We further investigate a more general mobile cloud network where each user has multiple independent tasks. Both cases with and without a CAP are studied, and corresponding nearly optimal solutions are obtained. In addition to the centralized optimizations above, we also study the interaction between selfish mobile users and the CAP. We use a game theoretic approach by letting mobile users distributively compute their own offloading decisions based on their respective cost function, while the CAP decides the allocation of communication and computation resources. We show that a Nash equilibrium (NE) exists in our formulated game, and we propose an algorithm which leads to an NE in finite steps. In all cases above, we show that the proposed methods provide nearly optimal performance. Furthermore, by exploiting the CAP efficiently, we can significantly reduce the energy and computation costs of mobile cloud computing over traditional two-tier systems where offloaded tasks are only processed at the remote cloud center.
