Query Formulation as an Information Retrieval Problem

Query Formulation as an Information Retrieval Problem PDF Author: A. H. M. ter Hofstede
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Information retrieval
Languages : en
Pages : 30

Book Description
Abstract: "Query formulation in the context of large conceptual schemata is known to be a hard problem. When formulating ad-hoc queries users may become overwhelmed by the vast amount of information that is stored in the information system; leading to a feeling of lost in conceptual space. In this article we develop a strategy to cope with this problem. This strategy is based on ideas from the information retrieval world. In particular the query by navigation mechanism and the stratified hypermedia architecture. The stratified bypermedia [sic] architecture is used to describe the information contained in the information system on multiple levels of abstraction. When using our approach to the formulation of queries, a user will first formulate a number of simple queries corresponding to linear paths through the information structure. The formulation of the linear paths is the result of the explorative phase of query formulation. Once users have specified a number of these linear paths, they may combine them to form more complex queries. This last process is referred to as query by construction, and correpsonds to the constructive phase of the query formulation process."

Interactive Query Formulation and Feedback Experiments in Information Retrieval

Interactive Query Formulation and Feedback Experiments in Information Retrieval PDF Author: Cornell University. Dept. of Computer Science
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Information storage and retrieval systems
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
The effective use of information retrieval systems by end-users has been limited by their lack of knowledge on the particular organization of the databases searched and by their limited experience on how to formulate and modify search statements. This thesis explores and evaluate two mechanisms to improve retrieval performance by end-users.

Introduction to Information Retrieval

Introduction to Information Retrieval PDF Author: Christopher D. Manning
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139472100
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Class-tested and coherent, this textbook teaches classical and web information retrieval, including web search and the related areas of text classification and text clustering from basic concepts. It gives an up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the design and implementation of systems for gathering, indexing, and searching documents; methods for evaluating systems; and an introduction to the use of machine learning methods on text collections. All the important ideas are explained using examples and figures, making it perfect for introductory courses in information retrieval for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in computer science. Based on feedback from extensive classroom experience, the book has been carefully structured in order to make teaching more natural and effective. Slides and additional exercises (with solutions for lecturers) are also available through the book's supporting website to help course instructors prepare their lectures.

Query Understanding for Search Engines

Query Understanding for Search Engines PDF Author: Yi Chang
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030583341
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
This book presents a systematic study of practices and theories for query understanding of search engines. These studies can be categorized into three major classes. The first class is to figure out what the searcher wants by extracting semantic meaning from the searcher’s keywords, such as query classification, query tagging, and query intent understanding. The second class is to analyze search queries and then translate them into an enhanced query that can produce better search results, such as query spelling correction or query rewriting. The third class is to assist users in refining or suggesting queries in order to reduce users’ search effort and satisfy their information needs, such as query auto-completion and query suggestion. Query understanding is a fundamental part of search engines. It is responsible to precisely infer the intent of the query formulated by the search user, to correct spelling errors in his/her query, to reformulate the query to capture its intent more accurately, and to guide the user in formulating a query with precise intent. The book will be invaluable to researchers and graduate students in computer or information science and specializing in information retrieval or web-based systems, as well as to researchers and programmers working on the development or improvement of products related to search engines.

Information Retrieval: Uncertainty and Logics

Information Retrieval: Uncertainty and Logics PDF Author: Fabio Crestani
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780792383024
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
A collection of papers proposing, developing, and implementing logical IR models. After an introductory chapter on non-classical logic as the appropriate formalism with which to build IR models, papers are divided into groups on three approaches: logical models, uncertainty models, and meta-models. Topics include preferential models of query by navigation, a logic for multimedia information retrieval, logical imaging and probabilistic information retrieval, and an axiomatic aboutness theory for information retrieval. Can be used as a text for a graduate course on information retrieval or database systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry. Introduction to Modern Information Retrieval

Introduction to Modern Information Retrieval PDF Author: Gobinda G. Chowdhury
Publisher: Facet Publishing
ISBN: 185604694X
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
An information retrieval (IR) system is designed to analyse, process and store sources of information and retrieve those that match a particular user's requirements. A bewildering range of techniques is now available to the information professional attempting to successfully retrieve information. It is recognized that today's information professionals need to concentrate their efforts on learning the techniques of computerized IR. However, it is this book's contention that it also benefits them to learn the theory, techniques and tools that constitute the traditional approaches to the organization and processing of information. In fact much of this knowledge may still be applicable in the storage and retrieval of electronic information in digital library environments. The fully revised third edition of this highly regarded textbook has been thoroughly updated to incorporate major changes in this rapidly expanding field since the second edition in 2004, and a complete new chapter on citation indexing has been added. Unique in its scope, the book covers the whole spectrum of information storage and retrieval, including: users of IR and IR options; database technology; bibliographic formats; cataloguing and metadata; subject analysis and representation; automatic indexing and file organization; vocabulary control; abstracts and indexing; searching and retrieval; user-centred models of IR and user interfaces; evaluation of IR systems and evaluation experiments; online and CD-ROM IR; multimedia IR; hypertext and mark-up languages; web IR; intelligent IR; natural language processing and its applications in IR; citation analysis and IR; IR in digital libraries; and trends in IR research. Illustrated with many examples and comprehensively referenced for an international audience, this is an indispensable textbook for students of library and information studies. It is also an invaluable aid for information practitioners wishing to brush up on their skills and keep up to date with the latest techniques.
