The Nature of Trusteeship

The Nature of Trusteeship PDF Author: John W. Nason
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : College trustees
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
The responsibilities and problems confronting college and university trustees in the last quarter of the 20th century are considered. The following topics are briefly addressed: increased enrollments after World War II, the growth of community colleges, the establishment of state coordinating commissions, political influences, federal support and intervention, retrenchment, and confusion of mission. Responsibilities of trustees are as follows: maintaining the integrity of the trust, appointing the college president, insuring that the institution is managed well, approving the budget, raising money, managing the endowment, assuring adequate physical facilities, overseeing the educational program, approving long-range plans, serving as a bridge between campus and community, preserving institutional autonomy, serving as court of appeal, and being informed. The collective responsibilities of trustees and the composition and operation of the board are addressed, including selection and orientation, committee structure and meetings, role of the chairman and president, and board morale. The legal liability of trustees and conflicts of interest are also discussed. Statistics on governing boards and a substantial bibliography are appended.

The Guardians

The Guardians PDF Author: Clark Kerr

Pages : 256

Book Description
The American institution of Academic Boards of Trustees is examined, with attention to their operation and conduct; their importance to the effective functioning of American higher education; whether their roles are subject to erosion over time; and their relationship to the college presidency. The analysis is based partially on interviews conducted in previous Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) studies on the college presidency, and returned survey responses (N=1,400) on board operations from board chairs, presidents and heads of campus faculty organizations who were serving in 1987. The monograph covers various aspects of the operations of the boards of trustees, including their functions, their historical development, and trends. A number of evaluations are made, major problem areas are identified (such as drawing the line between what the board does and what the president and other administrators do) and 22 recommendations are advanced. The appendixes include the following items: (1) a list of participants; (2) the questionnaire itself; (3) various documentation, including reports relating to the board of trustees; and (4) a 12-page annotated bibliography. Reclaiming the American Dream

Reclaiming the American Dream PDF Author: Richard C. Cornuelle
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 135149449X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
This book was the first to sketch the full dimensions of the nation's voluntary sector, give it a name (the independent sector), explain its unfamiliar metabolism, and imagine its enormous unused potential for defining the central problems of an industrial society accurately and acting on them effectively. Upon publication, George Gallup said the book has sparked "the most dramatic shift in American thinking since the New Deal."
