Book Description
Annotation Contains 24 papers from the November, 1998 symposium of the same name, sponsored by the ASTM Committee E8 on Fatigue and Fracture, and presented by Newman and Piascik (both of the NASA Langley Research Center). The papers focus on such areas as fatigue-crack growth threshold mechanisms, loading and specimen-type effects, analyses of fatigue-crack-growth-threshold behavior, and applications of threshold concepts and endurance limits to aerospace and structural materials. Book Description
Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Expert System for Fatigue Crack Growth Predictions Based on Fatigue Crack Closure

Expert System for Fatigue Crack Growth Predictions Based on Fatigue Crack Closure PDF Author: Ji-Ho Song
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811680361
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 88

Book Description
This book demonstrates fatigue crack growth under random loading graphically. This state-of-the-art monograph introduces an expert system for crack growth predictions, particularly based on crack closure. The system is developed after years of research by the authors by using the Math-type software consisting of 5 parts. This system is unique as it is fundamentally different from previous systems as it focuses on fatigue crack growth predictions based on fatigue crack closure. This book can be a useful guide for practicing engineers, researchers, and students in the fields of mechanical, aerospace, or civil engineering.

On Crack Closure in Fatigue Crack Growth

On Crack Closure in Fatigue Crack Growth PDF Author: AJ. McEvily
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crack-filling closure
Languages : en
Pages : 9

Book Description
A brief review of the various forms of closure is given, and the relative importance of plasticity-induced closure and roughness-induced closure is considered. On the basis of the lack of a thickness effect and an insensitivity to R in the absence of closure it is concluded that plasticity-induced closure plays a relatively minor role in affecting the rate of fatigue crack propagation with the exception of overload effects. A new form of closure, transitional closure is described and is shown to affect importantly the rate of fatigue crack growth upon a change in R ratio. The closure process for a short crack approaching a grain boundary is also discussed.

A Study of Crack Closure in Fatigue

A Study of Crack Closure in Fatigue PDF Author: T. T. Shih
Publisher:

Category : Metals
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
Crack closure phenomenon in fatigue was studied by using a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The occurrence of crack closure was directly measured by an electrical-potential method, and indirectly by load-strain measurement. The experimental results showed that the onset of crack closure depends on both the stress ratio, and the maximum stress intensity factor. No crack closure was observed for stress ratio, greater than 0.3 in this alloy. A two-dimensional elastic model was used to explain the behavior of the recorded load-strain curves. Closure force was estimated by using this model. Yield level stress was found near the crack tip. Based on this estimated closure force, the crack opening displacement was calculated. This result showed that onset of crack closure detected by electrical-potential measurement and crack-opening-displacement measurement is the same. The implications of crack closure on fatigue crack are considered. The experimental results show that crack closure cannot fully account for the effect of stress ratio, on crack growth, and that it cannot be regarded as the sole cause for delay.

Book Description
This book offers a concise introduction to fatigue crack growth, based on practical examples. It discusses the essential concepts of fracture mechanics, fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude loading and the determination of the fracture-mechanical material parameters. The book also introduces the analytical and numerical simulation of fatigue crack growth as well as crack initiation.
