Free Boundary Problems in Fluid Flow with Applications

Free Boundary Problems in Fluid Flow with Applications PDF Author: J M Chadam
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780582215672
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
This is the third of three volumes containing the proceedings of the International Colloquium 'Free Boundary problems: Theory and Applications', held in Montreal from June 13 to June 22, 1990. The main part of this volume studies the flow of fluids, an area which has led to many of the classical free boundary problems. The first two sections contain the papers on various problems in fluid mechanics. The types of problems vary fromthe collision of two jets to the growth of a sand wave. In the next two sections porous flow is considered. This has important practical applications in fields such as petroleum engineering and groundwater pollution. Some new and interesting free boundary problems in geology and engineering are treated in the final section.

Variational and Free Boundary Problems

Variational and Free Boundary Problems PDF Author: Avner Friedman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461383579
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications VARIATIONAL AND FREE BOUNDARY PROBLEMS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1990- 91 IMA program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries. " The aim of the workshop was to highlight new methods, directions and problems in variational and free boundary theory, with a concentration on novel applications of variational methods to applied problems. We thank R. Fosdick, M. E. Gurtin, W. -M. Ni and L. A. Peletier for organizing the year-long program and, especially, J. Sprock for co-organizing the meeting and co-editing these proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation whose financial support made the workshop possible. Avner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE In a free boundary one seeks to find a solution u to a partial differential equation in a domain, a part r of its boundary of which is unknown. Thus both u and r must be determined. In addition to the standard boundary conditions on the un known domain, an additional condition must be prescribed on the free boundary. A classical example is the Stefan problem of melting of ice; here the temperature sat isfies the heat equation in the water region, and yet this region itself (or rather the ice-water interface) is unknown and must be determined together with the tempera ture within the water. Some free boundary problems lend themselves to variational formulation.

Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States, 3

Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States, 3 PDF Author: N.G Lloyd
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461203937
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 567

Book Description
Nonlinear diffusion equations have held a prominent place in the theory of partial differential equations, both for the challenging and deep math ematical questions posed by such equations and the important role they play in many areas of science and technology. Examples of current inter est are biological and chemical pattern formation, semiconductor design, environmental problems such as solute transport in groundwater flow, phase transitions and combustion theory. Central to the theory is the equation Ut = ~cp(U) + f(u). Here ~ denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, cp and f are given functions and the solution is defined on some domain n x [0, T] in space-time. FUn damental questions concern the existence, uniqueness and regularity of so lutions, the existence of interfaces or free boundaries, the question as to whether or not the solution can be continued for all time, the asymptotic behavior, both in time and space, and the development of singularities, for instance when the solution ceases to exist after finite time, either through extinction or through blow up.

Free Boundary Problems

Free Boundary Problems PDF Author: Pierluigi Colli
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3034878931
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
Many phenomena of interest for applications are represented by differential equations which are defined in a domain whose boundary is a priori unknown, and is accordingly named a "free boundary". A further quantitative condition is then provided in order to exclude indeterminacy. Free boundary problems thus encompass a broad spectrum which is represented in this state-of-the-art volume by a variety of contributions of researchers in mathematics and applied fields like physics, biology and material sciences. Special emphasis has been reserved for mathematical modelling and for the formulation of new problems.

Optimization with PDE Constraints

Optimization with PDE Constraints PDF Author: Ronald Hoppe
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319080253
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
This book on PDE Constrained Optimization contains contributions on the mathematical analysis and numerical solution of constrained optimal control and optimization problems where a partial differential equation (PDE) or a system of PDEs appears as an essential part of the constraints. The appropriate treatment of such problems requires a fundamental understanding of the subtle interplay between optimization in function spaces and numerical discretization techniques and relies on advanced methodologies from the theory of PDEs and numerical analysis as well as scientific computing. The contributions reflect the work of the European Science Foundation Networking Programme ’Optimization with PDEs’ (OPTPDE).
