Ordinary Differential Equations and Stability Theory:

Ordinary Differential Equations and Stability Theory: PDF Author: David A. Sanchez
Publisher: Courier Dover Publications
ISBN: 0486837599
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
This brief modern introduction to the subject of ordinary differential equations emphasizes stability theory. Concisely and lucidly expressed, it is intended as a supplementary text for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students who have completed a first course in ordinary differential equations. The author begins by developing the notions of a fundamental system of solutions, the Wronskian, and the corresponding fundamental matrix. Subsequent chapters explore the linear equation with constant coefficients, stability theory for autonomous and nonautonomous systems, and the problems of the existence and uniqueness of solutions and related topics. Problems at the end of each chapter and two Appendixes on special topics enrich the text.

Existence Theory for Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations

Existence Theory for Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations PDF Author: Donal O'Regan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401715173
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
We begin our applications of fixed point methods with existence of solutions to certain first order initial initial value problems. This problem is relatively easy to treat, illustrates important methods, and in the end will carry us a good deal further than may first meet the eye. Thus, we seek solutions to Y'. = I(t,y) (1. 1 ) { yeO) = r n where I: I X R n ---+ R and I = [0, b]. We shall seek solutions that are de fined either locally or globally on I, according to the assumptions imposed on I. Notice that (1. 1) is a system of first order equations because I takes its values in Rn. In section 3. 2 we will first establish some basic existence theorems which guarantee that a solution to (1. 1) exists for t > 0 and near zero. Familiar examples show that the interval of existence can be arbi trarily short, depending on the initial value r and the nonlinear behaviour of I. As a result we will also examine in section 3. 2 the dependence of the interval of existence on I and r. We mention in passing that, in the results which follow, the interval I can be replaced by any bounded interval and the initial value can be specified at any point in I. The reasoning needed to cover this slightly more general situation requires minor modifications on the arguments given here.

Nonlinear Second Order Elliptic Equations Involving Measures

Nonlinear Second Order Elliptic Equations Involving Measures PDF Author: Moshe Marcus
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110305313
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
In the last 40 years semi-linear elliptic equations became a central subject of study in the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. On the one hand, the interest in this area is of a theoretical nature, due to its deep relations to other branches of mathematics, especially linear and nonlinear harmonic analysis, dynamical systems, differential geometry and probability. On the other hand, this study is of interest because of its applications. Equations of this type come up in various areas such as problems of physics and astrophysics, curvature problems in Riemannian geometry, logistic problems related for instance to population models and, most importantly, the study of branching processes and superdiffusions in the theory of probability. The aim of this book is to present a comprehensive study of boundary value problems for linear and semi-linear second order elliptic equations with measure data. We are particularly interested in semi-linear equations with absorption. The interactions between the diffusion operator and the absorption term give rise to a large class of nonlinear phenomena in the study of which singularities and boundary trace play a central role. This book is accessible to graduate students and researchers with a background in real analysis and partial differential equations.

Second Order Linear Differential Equations in Banach Spaces

Second Order Linear Differential Equations in Banach Spaces PDF Author: H.O. Fattorini
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080872190
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
Second order linear differential equations in Banach spaces can be used for modelling such second order equations of mathematical physics as the wave equation, the Klein-Gordon equation, et al. In this way, a unified treatment can be given to subjects such as growth of solutions, singular perturbation of parabolic, hyperbolic and Schrödinger type initial value problems, and the like. The book covers in detail these subjects as well as the applications to each specific problem.

Handbook of First-Order Partial Differential Equations

Handbook of First-Order Partial Differential Equations PDF Author: Andrei D. Polyanin
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780415272674
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
This book contains about 3000 first-order partial differential equations with solutions. New exact solutions to linear and nonlinear equations are included. The text pays special attention to equations of the general form, showing their dependence upon arbitrary functions. At the beginning of each section, basic solution methods for the corresponding types of differential equations are outlined and specific examples are considered. It presents equations and their applications, including differential geometry, nonlinear mechanics, gas dynamics, heat and mass transfer, wave theory and much more. This handbook is an essential reference source for researchers, engineers and students of applied mathematics, mechanics, control theory and the engineering sciences.
