William S. Rosecrans and the Union Victory
Author: David G. Moore
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786476249
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 251
Book Description
This is the first biography of Union General William S. Rosecrans in more than fifty years. It tells the story of his military successes and the important results that led to the Union victory in the Civil War: winning the first major campaign of the war in West Virginia in 1861; victories in northeastern Mississippi that made the Vicksburg Campaign possible; gaining the victory without which Abraham Lincoln said the "nation could scarcely have lived over"; conducting two brilliant campaigns in Tennessee and fighting the battle of Chickamauga (giving permanent possession of Chattanooga to the federals); defending Missouri from an invasion in 1864. The book also attempts to explain why Rosecrans was removed four times despite his military successes and examines the important part politics played in the war. Additionally it reveals a man who promoted many advances in medical care, transportation and cartography; a man interested in engineering as well as theology.

The Old Nineteenth Tennessee Regiment, C. S. A
Author: W. J. Worsham
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484458887
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
Excerpt from The Old Nineteenth Tennessee Regiment, C. S. A: June, 1861 April, 1865 With no humble apologies, no unmanly servility, cherishing no petty strife, and indulging no sullen treachery, they are frank, honest, patriotic citizens of the United States, accepting the present, trusting the future, and proud of the past. For myself, Iwant to thank the author for this book. It calls up and puts in permanent form, facts, long since familiar, which would otherwise soon be lost. Comrades of the old Nineteenth, remnant of the 1060 who went out with us, we owe more than a vote of thanks to the author, for his efforts to preserve the history of the patriotic courage and deeds of noble daring of these men, many of whom fell in battle, and many others since the war have crossed over the river and rest under the shade of the trees. Our children will thank him for thus putting in simple narrative the incidents, in regular order, of our marches, our camp-life and our battles. But this will not help pay for the publication of the book. Remember it has a limited scope, and under the conditions can not have a very extensive circulation. Let us see that the good Doctor has readers enough to meet the cost of the work. And when the roll is called up yonder, may we all be there, is the earnest prayer of your long - time and loving chaplain.
