Pages : 58

Book Description
Tamerlane and Other Poems is the first published work by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The short collection of poems was first published in 1827. Today, it is believed only 12 of approximately 50 copies of the collection still exist. The poems were largely inspired by Lord Byron, including the long title poem "Tamerlane", which depicts a historical conqueror who laments the loss of his first romance. Like much of Poe's future work, the poems in Tamerlane and Other Poems include themes of love, death, and pride.

I'm Just No Good at Rhyming PDF Author: Chris Harris
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
ISBN: 0316266590
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
The instant New York Times bestseller featured on NPR's Weekend Edition with Scott Simon! B. J. Novak (bestselling author of The Book With No Pictures) described this groundbreaking poetry collection as "Smart and sweet, wild and wicked, brilliantly funny--it's everything a book for kids should be." Lauded by critics as a worthy heir to such greats as Silverstein, Seuss, Nash and Lear, Harris's hilarious debut molds wit and wordplay, nonsense and oxymoron, and visual and verbal sleight-of-hand in masterful ways that make you look at the world in a whole new wonderfully upside-down way. With enthusiastic endorsements from bestselling luminaries such as Lemony Snicket, Judith Viorst, Andrea Beaty, and many others, this entirely unique collection offers a surprise around every corner. Adding to the fun: Lane Smith, bestselling creator of beloved hits like It's a Book and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, has spectacularly illustrated this extraordinary collection with nearly one hundred pieces of appropriately absurd art. It's a mischievous match made in heaven! "Ridiculous, nonsensical, peculiar, outrageous, possibly deranged--and utterly, totally, absolutely delicious. Read it! Immediately!" --Judith Viorst, bestselling author of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Old Monarch

Old Monarch PDF Author: Courtney Marie Andrews
Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing
ISBN: 1524870307
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
Some people are like monarch butterflies—solitary by nature, on a passionate search for somewhere. Critically acclaimed songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews presents her first poetry collection. This poetry collection reads like a transformation, me, the narrator, being the figurative Old Monarch. Documenting this journey, the book is separated into three sections, "Sonoran Milkweed," "Longing In Flight," and "Eucalyptus Tree (My Arrival to Rest)." In the first stage of my journey, I explore my childhood in Arizona, and the naive assumptions of youth. At this stage in my journey, I am impressionable, seeing the world with all its nuances for the first time. Through the landscape of the Sonoran Desert, I explore some dark family dynamics and what a child sees. Several characters turn up in the early poems including my cowboy grandpa, and the single mother who raised me, despite many forthcomings. The early poems also explore my desire to see a brighter world of possibility beyond the dusty desert island, and see humans more clearly within the confounds of discovery. In the second stage, I have left home. I am falling in love for the first time, as I become a young woman. Finally, the last stage is the old monarch's arrival to the garden. There are a lot of metaphysical and philosophical poems in this section. I arrive at the figurative garden, and I finally understand the journey at the edge of my life. There are a lot of poems in the context of a garden here, accepting mortality and the ever-changing world. These are meant to be wise old woman poems.

The Lane and Other Poems

The Lane and Other Poems PDF Author: Terry Wilson
Publisher: Austin Macauley Publishers
ISBN: 1398494410
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
In The Lane and Other Poems, readers are transported to a unique setting: opposite a sobering-up unit in the heart of Adelaide's CBD. Amidst the nightly commotion and close encounters with the rawness of humanity, one might expect tales of chaos. Yet, these poems are imbued with the serenity of nature, the whisper of trees, and the vast expanse of the sky. The moon, a recurring muse, casts its gaze upon the world below, often reflecting on the crowns of human heads. While the collection does not shy away from the grittier aspects of life, presenting poignant portraits of individuals in turmoil, it also captures moments of genuine connection. The author’s interactions with many of these souls, from casual conversations to a memorable embrace and blessing from an African spiritualist, add depth and humanity to the narrative. This anthology is a testament to finding beauty and connection in unexpected places, and the resilience of the human spirit amidst adversity.

The Old Rob Poems

The Old Rob Poems PDF Author: John Lane
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781883197407
Category : Poetry

Pages : 0

Book Description
Poetry. John Lane's Old Rob is a character based loosely on a real mountain neighbor he knew when he first bought a place in the North Carolina mountains. The real Rob was a retired logger who dabbled in real estate. What struck Lane as they talked on his porch was how Rob was a seam character, like someone passing from the old mountain world into a purely modern one. That seemed like a fun persona and situation to play with. At the same time that Lane started on these poems he began to build a cabin on his place on the site of the original structure from the 19th century. He engaged a young mountain man to help him build it, someone who knew the old ways of framing what he called "a saw mill shack." Listening to this man gave Lane some of the stories that became Rob's experiences. In the end Rob emerged with a life and voice of his own and became charged with Lane's own experiences in the mountains. "Like Langston Hughes' Simple and Jim Wayne Miller's Briar, John Lane's Old Rob both stands for a time and a place and embodies its character. He points to the 'past inside the present' that Walker Evans talks about; but he also sees the future coming down the tracks."—Sebastian Matthews

Excerpt from An Autumn Lane and Other Poems Beyond the glistening runnel gray cliffs raise Heads that are ancient - turbaned in the blue As cities that were legends in the days When old Damascus flourished quaintly new. Not here may come the sounds from where is whirled The city's smoke that all the welkin drapes Harsh hammerings on the anvil of the world Where rushed humanity its fortune shapes.
