Excerpt from Duplicates From the Thomas E. H. Curtis Collection of Antique Glass In fifteen years of continuous effort the late T. E. H. Curtis gathered the largest collection of antique glass that has been brought together in this country. His collection contains a great number of unique pieces, but the desire to gradually improve the quality of the col lection made him frequently buy several specimens of the same type. Everybody knows the rarity of the Syrian bottles made of opaque white glass and blown in a mould. The Curtis collection contains a consider able number of specimens of this type and of nearly the same quality The same is the case with many other types of antique glass which are represented in the collection. It seemed to be unnecessary to keep in the collection all these different specimens of equal merit and of the same type. This sale is consequently not a sale of duplicates in the ordinary sense of the word. Besides these different types of extreme rarity we have included in the sale a certain number of pieces whose merit is aesthetic, rather than archaeological. A charming fancy of nature has thrown over primitively plain glass the vari-colored veil of iridescence. A certain number of pieces of this type have also been included in this sale. Finally, there are several groups of pieces which are slightly dam aged, but which are none the less valuable archaeological documents.
