Book Description
During the winter drilling season of l973-74 Panarctic Oils Ltd. demonstrated the feasibility of sea ice platforms for arctic offshore drilling when they successfully tested the well at N-52. Another well was drilled at Drake I-55 during 1974-75 and this year three offshore wells brought the total to five. There were a number of interesting "firsts" to this year's wells which further defined the limitations of ice platforms. For the first time two holes were drilled by Commonwealth Hi Tower Rig No. 2 at P-62 and M-25 during the same winter season. The thinnest pad was l4.7 feet at P-62 and it appears that even thinner ice can be used in future pads. ... The heavier Adeco Rig No. 4 was initiated at Jackson Bay Gl6 and remained on the site for over l00 days. Ice movement necessitated respudding and therefore a thorough study should be made into means of staying over the hole when large ice movements occur. FENCO CONSULTANTS LTD. was retained by Panarctic Oils Ltd. to design the ice platforms and to monitor the pads during construction and drilling. We appreciate having had the opportunity to conduct a number of experiments related to ice properties. The purpose of this report is to present and discuss the data gathered, analyze the platform performance and to make recommendations for future improvements -- ASTIS (online) database.

Physics and Mechanics of Ice

Physics and Mechanics of Ice PDF Author: P. Tryde

Book Description
In the programme of the symposium was written: "The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Me chanics has taken the initiative to organize the sympo sium. As the name of IUTAM implies, the organization brings forward achievements within the field of theore tical mechanics for application in science and engineer ing. According to the rules of IUTAM that only invited persons can attend, all lecturers and participants have been ap pOinted by the members of the scientific committee. To facilitate contact among the attending persons, it has been decided to restrict the total number to 85 persons including the lecturers. Only one session is planned, making it possible for everybody to attend all lectures. Most scientists and engineers have realized that the knowledge attained by extensive basic research is essen tial in order to solve technological problems. In the process of acquiring this knowledge we often fail to un derstand that scientific progress is only achieved by two main principles: (1) By studying the scientific litera ture and applying or improving the theories in order to predict behaviour and forces correctly, or (2) by re jecting existing theories and developing new ways to cope with the problem, resulting in a more differenti ated and, hopefully, more exact theory. Ice seems to be a simple material, but it is in fact so complex and strange that it is only in the latest dec ades that we have come to know some of the natural laws governing its behaviour.

Offshore Operation Facilities

Offshore Operation Facilities PDF Author: Huacan Fang
Publisher: Gulf Professional Publishing
ISBN: 0123972841
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1177

Book Description
Offshore Operation Facilities: Equipment and Procedures provides new engineers with the knowledge and methods that will assist them in maximizing efficiency while minimizing cost and helps them prepare for the many operational variables involved in offshore operations. This book clearly presents the working knowledge of subsea operations and demonstrates how to optimize operations offshore. The first half of the book covers the fundamental principles governing offshore engineering structural design, as well as drilling operations, procedures, and equipment. The second part includes common challenges of deep water oil and gas engineering as well as beach (shallow) oil engineering, submarine pipeline engineering, cable engineering, and safety system engineering. Many examples are included from various offshore locations, with special focus on offshore China operations. In the offshore petroleum engineering industry, the ability to maintain a profitable business depends on the efficiency and reliability of the structure, the equipment, and the engineer. Offshore Operation Facilities: Equipment and Procedures assists engineers in meeting consumer demand while maintaining a profitable operation. Comprehensive guide to the latest technology, strategies, and best practices for offshore operations Step-by-step approach for dealing with common challenges such as deepwater and shallow waters Includes submarine pipeline, cable engineering, and safety system engineering Unique examples from various offshore locations around the world, with special focus on offshore China

Book Description
IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific Committee. Dr. Muggeridge became chairman of this committee and Dr. Ian Jordaan became co-chairman of this committee as well as chairman of the local organizing committee. The symposium followed the very successful previous meeting, chaired by Professor P. Tryde in Copenhagen, by ten years. Both symposia uti lized Springer-Verlag to publish their proceedings. The Faculty of En gineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland were particul{lXly pleased to host this prestigious symposium as it marked the twentieth anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Research Centre.

Cost Estimate for 12,000' Drilling Rig for Ice Platform Drilling

Cost Estimate for 12,000' Drilling Rig for Ice Platform Drilling PDF Author: Tri Ocean Engineering Ltd
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Offshore oil well drilling
Languages : en
Pages : 16

Book Description
"This cost estimate has been prepared for a 12,000 foot drilling rig for use on offshore ice platforms during the winter and for land use during the summer. The basic rig price includes B.O.P. equipment for land application. The rig would be powered with AC diesel generators. The drilling motors would be DC and would be controlled through an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) system. The rig would be transportable by Hercules aircraft, however the B.O.P. equipment would have to be partially disassembled before transporting by aircraft. The land rig and surface B.O.P. system costs are estimated at $5,200,000. A 70 man transportable camp would cost an estimated $490,000. The sub-sea B.O.P. system costs would be in addition to the basic rig costs. Like the land B.O.P. equipment it would have to be partially disassembled for Hercules transportation. A sub-sea system with a 1,500 foot operating capability is estimated at $2,140,000. A reduction of $125,000 is possible if the second sub-sea control pod and hose reel is eliminated. The cost of a complete rig equipped for drilling to 12,000 feet from land and ice platforms would therefore be: Rig and land B.O.P.: $5,200,000; Camp: $490,000; Sub-sea B.O.P. system: $2,140,000; Total: $7,830,000"--Leaf [1].
