Irish Political Prisoners 1848-1922

Irish Political Prisoners 1848-1922 PDF Author: Professor Sean Mcconville
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134600984
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 833

Book Description
This is the most wide-ranging study ever published of political violence and the punishment of Irish political offenders from 1848 to the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. Those who chose violence to advance their Irish nationalist beliefs ranged from gentlemen revolutionaries to those who openly embraced terrorism or even full-scale guerilla war. Seán McConville provides a comprehensive survey of Irish revolutionary struggle, matching chapters on punishment of offenders with descriptions and analysis of their campaigns. Government's response to political violence was determined by a number of factors, including not only the nature of the offences but also interest and support from the United States and Australia, as well as current objectives of Irish policy.

Book Description
Ballykinlar Internment Camp was the first mass internment camp to be established by the British in Ireland during the War of Independence. Situated on the County Down coast and opened in December 1920, it became home to hundreds of Irish men arrested by the British, often on little more than the suspicion of involvement in the IRA. Held for up to a year, and subjected to often brutal treatment and poor quality food in an attempt to break them both physically and mentally, the interned men instead established a small community within the camp. The knowledge and skills possessed by the diverse inhabitants were used to teach classes, and other activities, such as sports, drama and music lessons, helped stave off boredom. In the midst of all these activities the internees also endeavoured to defy their captors with various plans for escape. The story of the Ballykinlar internment camp is on the one hand an account of suffering, espionage, murder and maltreatment, but it is also a chronicle of survival, comradeship and community.

Book Description
This book considers the use made by Irish Republicans of British courts in the struggle for independence, over the period between the Easter Rising and the Civil War. It examines the complex relationship between the Republican movement and the British legal order: Republican ideology demanded a boycott of British legal institutions in Ireland and committed Republicans to refuse to recognize the authority of British courts. The Republican movement established its own rival court structure - yet Republicans were simultaneously able to make effective use of British courts to promote a separatist agenda. This book offers new insight, from original sources, into Sinn FÃ?Â?Ã?Â(c)in's most celebrated use of British courts - the challenges to death sentences imposed by martial law courts in 1921 - as well as lesser-known aspects of Sinn FÃ?Â?Ã?Â(c)in's legal strategy: the use of coroner's inquests and claims for compensation; legal challenges in the English courts to the policy of court-martial and internment; and the co-ordinated defence of those captured in the course of the Republican military campaign in Britain in 1920-1.
