Methods and Tools for Drought Analysis and Management

Methods and Tools for Drought Analysis and Management PDF Author: Giuseppe Rossi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402059248
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
Frequent drought events have recently occurred in different Mediterranean regions. These have highlighted a general inadequacy of the current strategies applied to mitigate negative impacts of such phenomenon. This book provides various methods of drought monitoring at different spatial scales, as well as innovative drought forecasting techniques based on stochastic approaches. Besides common drought indices (i.e. SPI), new agrometeorological indices are proposed.

Coping with Water Scarcity

Coping with Water Scarcity PDF Author: Luis Santos Pereira
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402095791
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
One of the main problems confronting the world of the 21st Century is a shortage of water. There is already severe scarcity in many regions of the world, causing tremendous problems for local populations and indeed entire societies. There is insufficient water available for the production of food to alleviate poverty and starvation; the lack of water hampers industrial, urban and tourism development, forcing restrictions on other sectors, especially agriculture; health problems arise as the deterioration of ground and surface waters favours water-borne diseases, which flourish in the absence of decent water distribution and sewerage systems. Water conflicts still arise in areas under stress, while water for nature has become a vanishing priority in such zones. This book is a guide to the establishment of regional and/or local guidelines for developing and implementing new ideas for coping with water scarcity. The basic premise underlying the book is that water scarcity will persist, so personal, human and society-wide skills will be needed to cope with it while living in harmony with the necessary environmental constraints. The book provides basic information to assist decision makers, water managers, engineers, agronomists, social scientists and other professions (and their students) in formulating coherent, hopefully harmonious and consolidated views on the issue. Guidelines are also given for introducing the general public to the concept of water scarcity and how to deal with it.

Water Encyclopedia, Domestic, Municipal, and Industrial Water Supply and Waste Disposal

Water Encyclopedia, Domestic, Municipal, and Industrial Water Supply and Waste Disposal PDF Author: Jay H. Lehr
Publisher: Wiley-Interscience
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 1014

Book Description
Volume 1 outlines water supply infrastructure. The requirements for supplying water to a home, a city or a factory can be very different. Experts in these fields explain the nuances of the details involved in maintaining adequate quantity and quality for these different consumers. Waste water management can be of even greater concern, yet its management can follow similar paths when compared to sophisticated water supply treatment. Both the physics and chemistry of these fields are fully covered. Volume 2 deals with the big picture of regional water supplies, how they become contaminated, how they can be protected and how they can best serve the surrounding populations and industries. Significant focus is placed upon the natural chemistry of available water supplies and its biological impacts. Case studies from regions around the world offer an excellent picture of the world's water resources.

Aquaculture Engineering

Aquaculture Engineering PDF Author: Odd-Ivar Lekang
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118496094
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 743

Book Description
As aquaculture continues to grow at a rapid pace, understanding the engineering behind aquatic production facilities is of increasing importance for all those working in the industry. Aquaculture engineering requires knowledge of the many general aspects of engineering such as material technology, building design and construction, mechanical engineering, and environmental engineering. In this comprehensive book now in its second edition, author Odd-Ivar Lekang introduces these principles and demonstrates how such technical knowledge can be applied to aquaculture systems. Review of the first edition: 'Fish farmers and other personnel involved in the aquaculture industry, suppliers to the fish farming business and designers and manufacturers will find this book an invaluable resource. The book will be an important addition to the shelves of all libraries in universities and research institutions where aquaculture, agriculture and environmental sciences are studied and taught.' Aquaculture Europe 'A useful book that, hopefully, will inspire successors that focus more on warm water aquaculture and on large-scale mariculture such as tuna farming.' Cision

Agricultural Mechanization in Sub-Saharan Africa

Agricultural Mechanization in Sub-Saharan Africa PDF Author: Karim Houmy
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 112

Book Description
The manual work carried out by farmers and their families is often both arduous and time consuming and in many countries this is a major constraint to increasing agricultural production. Such day-to-day drudgery is a major contributoring factor in the migration of people, particularly the young, from the rural countryside to seek the prospect of a better life in the towns and cities. Farm production can be substantially increased through the use of mechanical technologies which both are labor-saving and directly increase yields and production. This document provides guidelines on the development and formulation of an agricultural mechanization strategy and forms part of FAO's approach on sustainable production intensification.
