This book examines and contextualizes Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad Ghazzālī’s (d. 505/1111) fierce response to antinomian and freethinking currents in twelfth-century Persia. Seyed-Gohrab offers a translation of Ghazzālī’s treatise on antinomians, and one of his religious rulings (fatwa) on the topic. Both were written after Ghazzālī’s intellectual crisis in 488/1095, when he voluntarily withdrew from his position as a Professor at the prestigious Niẓāmiyya College in Baghdad. He determined to live an ascetic life, devoting all his attention to God. In this period, Ghazzālī wrote his masterpieces in Arabic and Persian. Seyed-Gohrab shows that these two less-known works shed new light on the motivation for Ghazzālī's major works. The book depicts Ghazzālī’s Persian intellectual context, and the tumultuous political period in which a strong literary and Sufi antinomian trend emerged from the social periphery to become central to literary activities at the Saljuq court. The book also treats Ghazzālī’s Persian poetry, offering original insights into Ghazzālī’s contemporary, the celebrated polymath ʿUmar Khayyām (d. about 525/1131), whose transgressive quatrains are interpreted as a response to a suffocating religious context.

An account of how, in certain parts of sixteenth-century England, challenges to conventional piety anticipated the Reformation. Here is a richly detailed account of the relationship between Lollard heresy and orthodox religion before the English Reformation. Robert Lutton examines the pious practices and dispositions of families and individuals in relationto the orthodox institutions of parish, chapel and guild, and the beliefs and activities of Wycliffite heretics. He takes issue with portrayals of orthodox religion as buoyant and harmonious, and demonstrates that late medieval piety was increasingly diverse and the parish community far from stable or unified. By investigating the generation of family wealth and changing attitudes to its disposal through inheritance and pious giving in the important Lollard centre of Tenterden in Kent, he suggests that rapid economic development and social change created the conditions for a significant cultural shift. This study contends that in certain parts of England by the early sixteenth century piety was subject to dramatic changes which, in a number of important ways, anticipated the Reformation. This thesis analyses the religious activities of imperial women in the fourth century in the form of two case studies. Chapter One focuses on the empresses Helena, Constantia, Eusebia, and Justina, the latter three of whom are presented as Arian within the ancient sources. My analysis aims to look beyond the concerns of piety, heresy, and emotion that apparently motivated these women in their religious activity, and to highlight the broader political and familial contexts that influenced their actions. I argue that empresses became involved in religious activity in response to a range of imperial interests; in particular, I discuss the extent to which the implementation of religious policy, the volatility of ecclesiastical affairs, and concerns for the stability of the emperor’s reign affected their involvement in religion. Through their actions, imperial women from the fourth century helped establish religion as a key arena for later empresses to exercise power and influence in the new Christian empire. In Chapter Two, I turn my attention to the influence that imperial women had on the religious activities of other women. I focus on the examples of Helena and Constantina in Rome, and demonstrate the similarities and differences between their religious activities and those of Roman aristocratic ascetics Melania the Elder, Marcella, and Paula. My analysis indicates that while the religious conduct of imperial women provided a significant example to aristocratic ascetic women on how to engage in their endeavours, imperial women had limited influence on the specific practices of these ascetics. This, I argue, relates to the differing types of authority that imperial and aristocratic women sought to achieve through their constructions of piety. Overall, my research provides insight on how imperial women influenced and responded to the practice of Christianity during a time of significant religious change.
