She was attending Prince Edward County public school system in 1959 when local leaders forced the closure of the schools for five years (1959-1964) rather than desegregating. She was without an opportunity to go to school and get an education for two years. During the third year, she went to Blacksburg Virginia, to attend what would now be considered a middle school, graduating as salutatorian. The next year she attended school at Christiansburg Industrial Institute (CII.)

In July 1994, Thomas P. Odom was part of the U.S. Embassy team that responded to the Goma refugee crisis. He witnessed the deaths of 70,000 refugees in a single week. In the previous three months of escalating violence, the Rwandan genocide had claimed 800,000 dead.
