From Stoke Mandeville to Stratford
Author: Ian Brittain
Publisher: Common Ground Publishing
ISBN: 9781863359863
Category : Athletes with disabilities
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
As Aristotle once said, "If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development." When Dr Ian Brittain started researching the history of the Paralympic Games after beginning his PhD studies in 1999, it quickly became clear that there was no clear or comprehensive source of information about the Paralympic Games or Great Britain's participation in the Games. This book is an attempt to document the history of the summer Paralympic Games and present it in one accessible and easy-to-read volume. From the outset, it should be made very clear that this book is not meant to be an academic text. It has always been the author's intention that it should be a resource for anyone with an interest in the Paralympic Games, their history, or Great Britain's participation in the Games. Through twelve years of research, the author has brought together all of the facts, figures, and interesting stories that have occurred in the development of the summer Games-from their roots at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the United Kingdom to the global mega-event they have become today. This is the first publication to include images of posters, winner's medals, and other artefacts connected with the Games-some of which have never been seen in print. Every endeavour has been made to include all relevant information, and this text serves as an ideal starting point from which future researchers and historians may begin. As we have noticed recently with the increased documentation of Olympic history, it is the author's hope that this text will inspire others to contribute to a more complete history of the Paralympic Games. A more complete history may lead to a better understanding of the importance of the Paralympic Games and their impact upon the lives of people with disabilities.

Pages : 444
Book Description
This book was tbe result of a symposium beld at tbe American Cbernical Society meeting in Miami Beacb, Florida, September 10-15, 1989. The symposium was jointly sponsored by Tbe Society for Economfc Botany and tbe American Cbernical Society Food and Natural Product sub division. Tbere were five speakers. During tbe social sessions (mostly over drinks in abotel room), it became obvious tbat, regardless of tbe discipline, we were all speaking tbe same language. Yet, prior to tbe symposium, only a few of tbe participants knew one anotber. We decided to expand tbe symposium into a book. The book would, we boped, accomplish for otbers wbat we bad discovered in ourselves. That is, the field of Natural Products is broad, but similar in techniques and approach, ancient but modern, and bas been and continues to be extremely valuable to humankind. We wanted the book to serve as an introductory text for courses and as a reference work for the future. We also determined to include the structure of every chemical in the chapter where it was mentioned so the reader would not have to find the structure somewhere else or to try and deduce the structure from the chemical name. Little did we know what an undertaking these goals would be or the time this would take.

Let's Get Rid of Growth!
Author: Ariel Francais
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781484036556
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
We are at a dead end: growth has become unsustainable, it no longer generates jobs as in the past, it concentrates wealth in the hands of a tiny oligarchy and it is destroying our planet. Capital-led globalization is indeed behind this overall disaster, which will end with us if we do not react on time. But to do that we must have a project: an alternative to the deadly course that our world has taken. We must reverse our priorities; no longer expect from growth the solution to all our problems. We should rather prioritize our basic needs, the recovery of the environment, social conviviality and economic self-reliance.To do so, we must deliver a new world, which requires combating the ruling ideology, reinventing democracy, governing wisely and building fair societies. Intellectuals and activists have a special responsibility in this respect. This book is particularly intended for them. This is the overall project proposed by Ariel Franais, a blueprint for changing our world, turning it more fair, convivial and sustainable.
